Suffolk. Inq. the day of St. Michael, 15 Edw. I.
Thurstaneston. A messuage, 24a. land, 2a. pasture, and ½a. wood, which he purchased of William de Wynur to be held of Sir Thomas de Multon
his father, rendering him 6s. yearly ; 5a. land held of Brian de Posselingwrth, rendering him a clove gillyflower; 4a. held of Simon Luk, rendering 7½d.; 2a. held of John the chaplain, rendering 5d.; and 1½a. held of Henry Pepyn, rendering 2d. yearly.
Thurstaneston. The manor (extent given); he held nothing there in demesne, except at the will of his father ; and he paid to the earl of Lancaster 10s. yearly for the said manor, to Walter de Ellneye 5s., to John de Burton 6d., to Silvester de Huketon 5d., to Alexander de Cressener 10d., to the church of Haukedon 4d., and to the hundred of Rissebrig 9d. yearly.
He died on the eve of St. James, 15 Edw. I. Thomas his son, aged 11 on Thursday in the first week of Lent, in the same year, is his next heir.
Lincoln. Inq. Saturday after St. Michael, 15 Edw. I.
Hoylond. A manor called Beau Solaz (extent given) including 35a. pasture in a place called Le Bight, rendering 10s. yearly to the count of Britanny, and making up the sea dykes, which will commonly cost 4l. 13s. 4d. yearly. Thomas de Multon the elder gave the above to Edmunda late the wife of the said Thomas the younger in dower when he married her, but she died before her husband, and he has held nothing there since her death except at his father's will.

635. Geoffrey Haspal alias de Aspale, de Haspale.
Writ, 8 July, 15 Edw. I.
Surrey. Extent, Friday after the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 15 Edw. I.
Pudyndenne. All the following lands were held by the said Master Geoffrey for life by a final concord made in the king's court between him and Simon de Pudyndenne, so that after the death of the said Geoffrey they should wholly revert to William and Philip sons and heirs of the said Simon rendering to their father whilst he should live 11½ marks, but after his death they shall be quit of the said payment and shall hold the lands of the chief lords by the services due, viz.—a capital messuage, &c. containing 4a., 136a. arable and pasture, 16a. meadow, 5s. 10d. rent, and 2½a. wood, held of the king in chief, rendering 10s. yearly at the king's exchequer, and doing suit at the hundred of Tenrugge ; and the underwritten lands, &c. held of the fees of other lords, viz.—rent to Sir Roulond de Oxsted 4s. yearly, to the manor of Benchesham 10s., to the manor of Croweham 10s., to Robert de Stangrave 2s., to Walter at Reghe 6d., to John de Rugge 1d., to Geoffrey le Moulner 1d., and to Adam de Chevenynge and his heirs 12d., and doing suit at his court of la Bere; and there are there of the fee of Ralph de Hoxted 53a. arable, and 16a. meadow, and the said Simon and his heirs shall defend the same by 4d. rent which they shall receive yearly from 4a. meadow in Lymtheye, which do not pertain to the aforesaid lands of Pudyndenne; and there are there 20a. arable of the fee of Chelewy atte grave from which are paid 2s. to Robert de Stanegrave, but the said Robert holds of the same fee 35a. arable; and there are there 18a. arable and 6a. meadow of the fee of Adam de Chyvenynge, from which are paid to Margery le Toche 2s.; and 6l. 6s. 1d. rent of assize.
The aforesaid William, aged 34 at the feast of the Annunciation, and Philip, aged 31 in 15 Edw. I. are next heirs of all these lands by the fine and concord made at Westminster, 10 Edw. I.
Writ, 8 Aug. 15 Edw. I. Endorsed:—On the 20th day of August it was commanded to the sub-escheators in cos. Lincoln, Norfolk and Suffolk, Middlesex and Kent, Surrey and Sussex.
Suffolk ; Hundred of Plumbisgate. Inq. (undated.)
Northglemham. The manor (extent given) held of the prior and convent of the monks of Tefford for life, without any service except one suit to the said hundred.
Suffolk ; Hundred of Resebreg. Inq. The eve of St. Matthew the Apostle, 15 Edw. I.
Culingg. A messuage, 80a. arable, 2½a. meadow, 2½a. pasture, the advowson of the church, the advowson of the chapel of St. Margaret with the fair pertaining thereto at the feast of St. Margaret, jointly held by the said Master Geoffrey and John his brother, by purchase of Sir Robert le Pugeys, rendering 1d. yearly for all services; and 80a. arable, 60s. rent, a windmill and 2 customers, jointly held by the said Geoffrey and John by purchase of John de Cowelleston, rector of the church, doing to him 12d. yearly.
Richard de Aspale his brother, aged 50 and more, is his next heir.
Suffolk. Inq. Saturday the eve of St. Matthew the Apostle, 15 Edw. I.
Denham. The manor with the fruits of the church (extent given) held by the said Master Geoffrey to farm for five years, of which three will have elapsed at the feast of St. Michael, 15 Edw. I., of the abbot of St. Ozith, rendering him 35l. yearly; and 1 carucate land with the fruits of the said church held of the said abbot to farm as abovesaid.
Lincoln. Extent, Tuesday after the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 15 Edw. I.
Scalleby. The manor (extent given) including 2s. rent of two gardens for fish (ad piscem) in Ancholm, and rents of sokemen in Great and Little Cotes, near Grymesby, and in Sualwe, held of John Paynel by a mesne (per medium) by service of ½ knight's fee, and rendering 2s. warnoth to Sir Roger de Moubrey.

Kent. Extent, Saturday after the Nativity of St. Mary the Virgin, 15 Edw. I.
Nessyndene. The manor (extent given) including a water-mill bought of Gilbert Elys, outside the wall of Rochester, of the fee of Sir Robert Pugeys, lord of Magna Delthe, a wind-mill outside Estgate of the same fee, held of Geoffrey Costentyn, and another wind-mill situate upon the fee of Nicholas de Weldeham (?). The messuage and all the lands, &c., which are in demesne and of free fee are held of Sir Roger Loveday, doing 1d. only yearly ; Richard, brother of the said Geoffrey, is next heir of these lands: the other lands, &c., are 'Gavylygeyndeches,' and are held of divers lords paying 15s. 10d. yearly ; these lands, &c., are partible between all the brothers of the said Geoffrey, according to the custom of Kent.
He died in parts across the sea on the day of St. Barnabas, as the jury believe.

[Essex.] Inq. Saturday after St. Gregory, 15 Edw. I.
Elmedon. The manor (extent given), held of the honour of Boulogne for ¼ knight's fee, doing two suits at the court of St. Martin yearly at London; but the said Robert held nothing there, for he had enfeoffed Sir Ernulph his son of the manor five years and more before his death.
The said Sir Ernulph, aged 30 and more, is his next heir.
[Essex.] Inq. Thursday after mid Lent, 15 Edw. I.
Ginge Mounteny. The manor (extent given) held of the earl of Gloucester in chief, service unspecified; but he held no lands there for he seised the said Ernulph of the manor four years before his death.

Cambridge. Inq. and extent (undated).
Haselingfeud. 55a. arable, 5a. meadow and pasture, 8 free tenants rendering 17s. 8d. yearly, 6 villeins rendering 13s. 10d. yearly and doing 112 works; but he held nothing there, for long before his death he gave all his lands &c. there to the said Ernulph who now holds them of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of ½ knight's fee.

[Suffolk.] Extent, Saturday after St. Matthias the Apostle, 15 Edw. I.
Neuton. The manor (extent given) held of Sir Robert son of Walter in chief by service of 1 knight's fee, excepting 22a. land held of Sir Roger de Leukenore by service of 6s. 8d. yearly; but he gave the manor in 9 Edw. I. to the said Ernulph, who did the services due to the lords of the fees, but not homage.
He died on Friday before St. Clement, in the said year. Heir as above, aged 40 at Christmas in the same year.
[Norfolk.] Extent, Tuesday after the close of Easter, 15 Edw. I.
Hewode. The manor (full extent given) including works or customs called 'lammesevenes' (?), 'hoverunderbenes' (?), 'metebenes' (?), and 'bocechewes' (?), and the farm of a third part of the forest of Disce and of the hundred, held of Sir Robert son of Walter in chief by service of 1 knight's fee and 5s. yearly rent, excepting 4a. land held of Sir William de Monte Kaniso by service of 12d., and 2 pieces of meadow held of Sir Robert de Scheltune and William de Ludham by service of 8½d.; but he gave the manor in 9 Edw. I. to the said Ernulph, who did the services due to the lords of the fees, but not homage.
Date of death as above. Heir as above, aged 40 at Christmas in the said year.
Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of the aforesaid Ernulph, that the above manors had been taken into the king's hand, 1 July, 15 Edw. I.
Suffolk ; Norfolk. Inq. Friday in Whitsun week, 16 Edw. I.
The said Sir Robert enfeoffed Ernulph, his son, of the manors of Neuton, co. Suffolk, and Heywode, co. Norfolk, about Easter 10 Edw. I., three years before a fourth part of the manor of Haselyngfeld descended to the said Robert by the death of the Lady Joan de Somery, [who held it in dower of the gift of Stephen de Someri sometime her husband, uncle of the said
Robert, of whom he was one of the heirs]; and the said Ernulph was seised of those manors for a long time until he granted them to his said father for life by a fine levied in the king's court, he rendering a rose to the said Ernulph and doing all services due to the chief lords of the fee ; and afterwards the said Robert quit-claimed to the said Ernulph for ever the said manors.
[Essex.] Inq. Friday after Holy Trinity, 16 Edw. I.
The said Sir Robert enfeoffed Arnulph his son of the manor of Gyng Munteny on Monday after the Annunciation, 10 Edw. I., three years and more before the said fourth part of Haselingfeud manor descended to the said Robert, and the said Arnulph afterwards granted the same for life by fine, &c. (as above) to his said father, rendering to the said Arnulph a pair of gilt spurs yearly; after which the said Robert quit-claimed the manor to the said Arnulph for ever, he rendering to the said Robert 40l. yearly for his life.
Essex. Inq. Tuesday after Holy Trinity, 16 Edw. I.
The said Robert enfeoffed Ernulph his son of the manor of Elmedon, at the feast of St. Botolph, 5 Edw. I., five years before the said fourth part of the manor of Haslingfeud descended to him after the death of Joan de Somery, and the said Ernulph afterwards granted the same for life, by fine in the king's court, 6 Edw. I., to his said father, rendering to the said Ernulph a pair of gilt spurs yearly; after which the said Robert quit-claimed the manor to the said Ernulph for ever, in 9 Edw. I., he rendering to the said Robert 100s. yearly for his life. Joan de Somery died at the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 10 Edw. I.

York. Extent, Monday after St. Luke, 15 Edw. I.
Drax manor. A capital manse with an old garden, park, toft and croft at Kyrck Drax; the fishery of Rocholm ; in Ayremen 120 quarters of oats by the small measure 'per estrick' called 'Gernermet' (?) each worth 10d., 12 bovates each containing 6a., 177a. and 1½p. of new assart, 5s. 1½d. 'milnemale,' and 10d. 'sondemale;' in Langerak from tenants of Lady Katherine Paynel 14½d.; in Newland 6d. 'milnemale;' in Kyrk Drax, from tenants of the said Lady Katherine, 9 hens and 41 eggs; in the borough from free tenants &c. 41s. 10½d.; and in the city of York 27s. 4d.; and court of Drax is worth ½ mark yearly. 4s. 8½d. yearly are due to the king for blanch farm.

West Rasen. The manor (full extent given) including 20s. 4½d. rent of free tenants in Middle Rasen, 2s. in Oselby, and 4d. in Newton and Toft, and a custom at Ascension Day called 'wythskilt,' held of the king in chief by barony, as the jury believe; and 21a. 1r. land, of his own purchase and that of his father, held of Thomas Jollayn by service of ½d.; but there are rendered to Peter de Scoteny for a tenement in Middle Rasen 2s. yearly, and to Robert de Levesham 1d., and the lord of the manor shall find a lamp to burn in the choir of the church of All Saints, West Rasen, costing 3s. yearly. The advowson of the church pertains to the prior of Holy Trinity, York.
Philip Paynel his brother, aged 18 at the feast of St. Lawrence last, is his next heir.
Dorset. Extent, Tuesday after the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 15 Edw. I.
Suthcumb. [The manor] (extent given) held of Robert de Kaynes by service of a pair of gilt spurs price 6d. yearly.

Lincoln. Extent, Monday after the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 15 Edw. I.
Roxeby. The manor (extent given) including 20a. meadow in a place called Scoteny croft, 11a. meadow in Holmes and Hellecroft, and two wind-mills worth 20s. yearly and no more, for there is no suit of tenants except of grace, because the whole homage remained with the abbot of La Roche when the said John recovered the manor from him, held of the king in chief by barony.
The advowson of the church pertains to the prior of Drax and the prior of Holy Trinity, York, in parcenary.

Scalleby. A capital messuage and 10 bovates land in demesne worth with the rent of tenants, &c. and two gardens for fish (gardinorum ad piscem) in Ancholm, 10l. yearly, held by Richard Haspal brother and heir of Master Geoffrey de Haspal of Walter de la Lynde, and by him of John Paynel, by service of ⅓ knight's fee ; and a messuage and 6 bovates land, worth with the rent of tenants, &c., 100s. yearly, held by Walter de la Linde of John Paynel by service of 1/8 knight's fee.
Stratton by Baumburg. A capital messuage and 9 bovates land in demesne, held by Philip de Kyme of Philip Chauncy by service of 100s. yearly and 1 knight's fee, and by him of John Paynel by the same foreign service.
Heynton. A capital messuage and 8 bovates land in demesne, worth with the rent of free tenants 4l. yearly, and in Est Barkeworth and Suthreye by Bardeneye, 6 bovates land, held by Nicholas Tochet of Philip Chauncy by service of 1 knight's fee, and by him of John Dyve, and by him of John Paynel by the same service.

Lexington: The manor (extent given) including meadow in Henherd, Yatholm, and Steterippil, perquisites of the court of Scelford, 10 knights' fees in divers eounties held of the king in chief by service of keeping the forest of Schirwode, and 2½ fees held by foreign service, and the advowson of the church, held of the king in chief pertaining to his part of a barony.

Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint Alice late the wife of the said Robert that the manor of Shyreburn in Harefordlith, which is of her free marriage had been taken into the king's hand. Extents are to be made of that manor and other lands, and security being taken from the said Alice to surrender the heir at the king's command, he is to be permitted to be in her keeping, 7 Aug. 15 Edw. I.

Everingham. The manor (extent given with names of tenants) including a mill from which 31s. 8d. were assigned by Sir Adam de Everingham fifteen years ago to two chaplains celebrating divine service for the souls of him and his ancestors, and the advowson of the church, held of the Archbishop of York by service of ½ knight's fee and doing suit at the archbishop's court at Wilton.
Kybelingcotes. The manor with 24 bovates land, held of the provost (preposito) of Beverle by service of 8s. 8d. and doing suit at his court of Beverle; 12 bovates land held of Sir William de Ros by knight's service; 5 bovates held of Adam de Dogilby by knight's service; free tenants in Beverle and Eton rendering 14s. 2d.; and 1lb. cummin from John de London for ½ carucate land in Bessewyk.

Schireburn in Herfordlith. The manor was given by Adam de Everingham father of the said Robert, without any reserve to the said Robert and Alice de la Hyde his wife, doing the services due to the chief lords, and the said Alice has been in peaceful seisin thereof with the said Robert and since his death for sixteen years and more, until the escheator took the same into the king's hand with other lands of the said Robert.

Mirfeld. 1 carucate land similarly held by Adam de Heley.
Miggeley. ½ carucate land held by Sir John de Meus by free service of 2s. yearly.
Heton, Fresinghale, Armeley and Schepeker. ½ knight's fee held by Roger de Northalle.
Schipeley. ¼ knight's fee held by Theobald le Botiler.
Erdeslawe. 31 bovates land were held by the said Robert of the earl of Warenn' by homage and service of 20s. yearly, which 31 bovates were held of the said Robert by service of 38s. ..., from which he rendered yearly to the master of Wodchirche 3s. 4d., and to the said earl 20s. as abovesaid. He held nothing there of the king in chief.
[York.] Etton. 1 carucate land, whereof 8 make a knight's fee, held by Stephen de Etton, John de Kantebrug, widow Alice de Etton, Walter de Ispan(ia) and Henry de Garton by the same service (knight's service).

Writ of plenius certiorari, on the claim of Peter de Cestre, provost of Beverley, to have the wardship of certain lands held of him in Kibblingcotes by the said Robert. 14 Nov. 15 Edw. I.
[York.] Inq. Saturday after the Circumcision, 16 Edw. I.
Kiblyngcotes. A messuage and 24 bovates land were held by the said Robert and his ancestors of the said provost and his predecessors by service of 8s. 8d. yearly and doing suit at the court of Beverley every three weeks; and the tenants of the said Peter and his predecessors being under age, who have thus held by a yearly rent and suit of court, have hitherto been in the wardship of the said Peter and his predecessors; but the said Robert and all his ancestors time out of mind have been of full age at the death of their ancestors, so that no one has been in the wardship of the said Peter, &c.
Endorsed:—Inquisition taken within the liberty of Beverley by tenants of the provost.
York. Inq. Saturday after the Circumcision, 16 Edw. I.
Kiblyngcotes. A messuage and 24 bovates land held as abovesaid. Whether the wardship of such tenants pertains of right to the provost of Beverley or not the jury know not, but time out of mind they have not had the wardship of any of the said Robert's ancestors.

Writ of certiorari, whether the king and his predecessors have had primer seisin as well of the lands &c. which the said Robert, who held of the king in chief in Kibblingcotes, held of the provost of Beverley, as of other tenures in the same town, or whether the provosts have had such seisin;
whether the said Robert and his ancestors have had seisin through the king &c. or through the provosts; and whether those lands are held of the king or of the provost in socage or by other service, 6 Feb. 16 Edw. I.

Kybelingkotes. A messuage and 24 bovates land held as abovesaid by the said Robert, and he held there other lands &c. of other lords by knight's service. Neither the king nor his predecessors have ever had primer seisin of the said messuage and 24 bovates after the death of the said Robert and his ancestors, except that the present escheator has seized them into the king's hand. The said Robert and his ancestors have alawys hitherto had seisin through the provost of Beverly and not through the king, and have held the said lands &c. of the provosts by the aforesaid free service and not in socage.

Transcript of Writ of certiorari to William de Vescy, Justice of the forest beyond Trent, 8 April, 17 Edw. I.
Nottingham. Inq. made by the regarders and agisters of the forest and 12 jurors, Tuesday before Whitsunday, 17 Edw. I.
Robert de Everingham by reason of his bailiwick ought to hunt hare, wolf, squirrel and cat in the forest, and to have the bark and lop and top (couperones) of oaks which the king shall give from the demesne woods by writ, also after-pannage (retropannagium) whenever it shall happen, and the lawing of dogs, viz. for each dog not lawed 3s. every three years whenever the king's writ comes to make regard; and for millstones carried whenever they crossed the forest he had 20s. yearly; and he held 10 knights' fees of the king in chief, from the service of which he was exonerated on account of the keeping of the forest and for finding his foresters at his own costs; all the lands he had within the forest are outside regard by reason of his bailiwick, and all the dogs of his fee shall not be lawed. But the said Robert's bailiwick was taken from him and his heirs for ever in the last eyre
of William de Vescy and his companions justices for pleas of the forest at Nottingham, for many transgressions of which he was convicted in the same eyre, whereby the king can confer the bailiwick of forester in fee (feodi) of Schirewod on whomsoever he shall please.
