Inquisitions Post Mortem, Edward I, File 52

692. Walter de Valeyns alias de Valoyns, de Waleyns.
Writ of plenius certiorari to Robert de Offord, warden of the castle of Orford, to enquire whether the wardship of the lands and heirs of the said Walter in Gatesgrave pertains to the said castle or to Gilbert de Colevill as mesne between the heir and Edmund, earl of Cornwall, 29 Oct. 16 Edw. I.
[Suffolk.] Inq. Monday the feast of St. Cecilia, 17 Edw. I.
Orford. The said Walter held a marsh of the king in chief within the bounds of Orford, rendering 2d. yearly and making one attendance at the general court, and there is due fealty only, and 2d. relief when it shall happen.
Categrave. The said Walter held the manor of the fee of the earl of Cornwall, as the jury believe, but they know that he rendered 5d. thrice in two years for the guard of the castle of Eye, and 10s. at each of the two scutages last past to Gilbert de Colevil, who paid the same to the said earl as mesne between the said Walter and the earl.
John, his son and heir, is aged 14 as the jury believe.
Writ (de melius inquirendo) to Robert de Ufford, constable of the castle of Oreford, to enquire whether the king or any of his progenitors ever had the said wardship by reason of a certain marsh within the bounds of Oreford, 25 Dec. 17 Edw. I.
[Suffolk.] Inq. Monday before the Conversion of St. Paul, 17 Edw. I.
Orford. A marsh held &c. as above. Neither the king nor any of his progenitors ever by reason of the said marsh had the wardship of the other lands of the said Walter or his ancestors in Categrave or elsewhere, nor the marriage of any of them; except that Hugh de Diningtone (?), then constable of Orford, after the death of William father of the said Walter, by reason of the said marsh, took all his lands in Categrave into the king's hand as well as the said marsh, and for the same reason Robert de Ufford, who has the town and castle for life by the king's demise, has seised the same into the king's hand. The marsh is held by the same tenure as the king's men in Orford hold, from whom the king has neither wardship nor marriage, nor anything after the death of their ancestors but fealty only, and relief as much as they pay in yearly rent. The manor of Categrave is within the liberty of Orford, nor have the jury ever seen that the king or any one else has had the wardship or marriage of the heirs of the said tenement.
C. Edw. I. File 52. (1.)
693. William de Cantilupo.
Writ (of certiorari) and scire facias, on the complaint of William son of the said William, that the late escheator by reason of his minority having taken into the king's hand a messuage, 1 carucate of land, 4a. meadow and 11s. rent in Estcammell, which the said William the elder held of the inheritance of John de Hastinges, then in the king's wardship, and so detained it for a long time, had without the king's licence delivered the same in fee to Henry de Wllavnyton, so that being now for a long time of full age the said William could not obtain his seisin thereof. If it is found so, the escheator is to resume the tenement, into the king's hand. 1 May, 16 Edw. I.
Somerset. Inq. The eve St. Dunstan, 16 Edw. I.
Estkammel. William de Canti Lupo, father of the present William, held the aforesaid tenement of the heirs of John de Hastyngg' by knight's service, and it was taken into the king's hands, and afterwards delivered to Henry de Wullavynton without the king's special mandate, as aforesaid. George de Cantilupo, whose heir John de Hastyngges is, was then in the king's wardship, by reason of whose minority the said land was taken into the king's hand.
(See No. 17.)

Writ of venire facias to the sheriff of Somerset for an enquiry to be made whether the said Henry the father was seised in his demesne of a messuage and lands &c. in Est Camel (specified in No. 693) on the day he died, or William de Cantilupo father of William that now is, 26 May, 16 Edw. I.
Jury panel.
Somerset. Inq. Saturday after SS. Peter and Paul, 16 Edw. I.

C. Edw. I. File 52. (3.)
695. Nicholas baron of Stafford, deceased.
Writ of certiorari, on the complaint of Philomena late the wife of Hugh de Salte, that on the death of the said Hugh the said Nicholas had unjustly ejected her from a tenement in Bradelegh which the said Hugh and she had held of the said Nicholas of free marriage, and that the said Nicholas having died pending an assize of novel disseisin, the escheator had taken the said tenement, with those of the said Nicholas, into the king's hand, 26 Jan. 16 Edw. I.
Stafford. Inq. Wednesday the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, 16 Edw. I.
Bradeleye. One Vynus de Saut enfeoffed Philomena, daughter of Thomas de Kersewell, in free marriage with Hugh his son of a free tenement there, to be held in chief of the aforesaid Nicholas; which they held until the said Hugh's death, and fifteen days after the said Nicholas ejected the said Philomena, and held the same from the feast of St. Margaret to that of St. Matthew, 15 Edw. 697. Geoffrey son and heir of Geoffrey de Lucy.
Writ to Ralph de Hengham and John de Luvetot to enquire whether the said Geoffrey, who was born and baptized at Sullesbyri, and is in the king's wardship, is of full age as he says or not, 12 Oct. 16 Edw. I.
Writ to the sheriff of Buckingham to summon a jury, &c. 12 Oct. 16 Edw. I.
Mandate of venire facias from the said Ralph and John to the sheriff (undated), with jury panel.
Buckingham. Proof of age (undated).
Robert de Stok says the said Geoffrey was born at Chelmundescote between the Gule of August and the feast of St. Laurence, and at that term was 21, which he knows because the father of the said Geoffrey died about Whit Sunday four years ago, and an inquisition was then made which said that the said Geoffrey was 17.
William de Lyngenere agrees, for he married his wife at the Gule of August twenty-one years ago, and three or four days afterwards the said Geoffrey was born.
Thomas de la Waude agrees, for he was one of the jurors of the aforesaid inquisition, and he was in the service of the wife of Hugh de Dunsterr, who carried the said Geoffrey from the font in the church of Soleburi, and was then present.
Ralph de Leteburn agrees, for he was in Soleburi when he was baptized.
Ralph de la Mare agrees, for a handmaid who was with the mother of the said Geoffrey when he was born was in his service for five years and often certified of the age; and he married his wife in the same year.
Luke de Coblinton agrees, for on his return from across the sea he found his father dead, and did homage to the said Geoffrey's father on the day he was born, and it was between the said two feasts so many years ago.
John de Dagenhal agrees, and knows his age by that of a son of Ralph de Mare.
Warin de Brakenham agrees, for the son of Peter de Chelmundescote was of the same age and in his wardship, and half a year ago he restored him his land.
Simon Richer agrees, for he has a son of the same age.
John Michel agrees, for he sold to the said Geoffrey's father a mill half a year before he was born, and never received any money.
Nicholas Ambroys agrees, for his own wife lay in childbed when the said Geoffrey's mother was churched (purificata), and his daughter then born was of such an age last autumn.
John Mayn agrees, for he has a son born on the same night, and he was present when the mother was churched.
William le Somenur and Roger del Brok agree, and know it from the aforesaid inquisition.
John la Warde agrees, for his brother Henry is a week older.
Robert le Bor agrees, for his brother William is a year older.
