Aug. 26.
Westminster.
To the escheator in the county of Suthampton. Order, upon petition of Joan who was wife of Edmund duke of York, to make inquisition in his bailiwick what castles, manors, lands, fee farms, knights' fees and advowsons she holds of her heritage in her demesne as of fee and what in dower and for life after the duke's death and the death of William de Wylughby knight her husband, how and of whom they are held, by what service, and the yearly value thereof, and to send the inquisition into chancery under his seal and the seals of the jurors; as her petition shews that by colour of a judgment rendered against Henry Lescrope knight late her husband, who forfeited to the king, all the castles etc. by her so held are seized into the king's hands, praying that his hand be removed therefrom, and from the issues thereof taken. Westminster.
To Robert Coton and Thomas Denton collectors of the petty custom in the port of London. Order to take a tally upon them levied at the receipt of the exchequer for payment of 100l. to the king's use, and to deliver that sum to John Rothenale his treasurer. (fn. 1)
Aug. 8.
Southampton.
To all sheriffs of Oxford, Berkshire, Norhampton, Leycester, Notyngham, Yorkshire, the city of York, Northumberland and Newcastle upon Tyne. Order by several indentures to take of them who shall deliver the same on the king's behalf the heads of Henry Lescrope of Masham and Thomas Gray of Heton, who for treason against the king and their allegiance were by judgment against them rendered condemned to death and beheaded, and to the sheriffs of the city of York to set the said Henry's head upon a spear until further order in the place within that city appointed, and to the sheriff of Newcastle to set the head of the said Thomas likewise within that town. Southampton.
To the collectors of customs and subsidies in the port of London. Order, for particular causes now moving the king, to suffer all merchants native and alien to lade tin called 'shotyntyn' in ships and, after payment of customs, subsidies etc. thereupon due, to take it over to foreign parts at their pleasure, any statutes or ordinances to the contrary notwithstanding. Westminster.
To the collectors in the port of Kyngeston upon Hull and in singular the ports and places adjacent of the great and petty custom, the subsidy upon wool, hides and woolfells, and of the subsidy of 3s. upon every tun of wine and 12d. in the pound. Order under pain of forfeiture, for particular causes moving the king and council, to make no payments until further order to any lieges by virtue of any tally upon the collectors levied at the receipt of the exchequer or any other command to them addressed, except them that have letters patent or other mandates concerning such tallies for payment out of the customs and subsidies aforesaid. It is the king's will and intent that all sums assigned for safe guard of the town and march of Calais, of the march of the realm towards Scotland, and of Ireland, and all borrowed for furtherance of his present expedition whereof assignation is made by tallies for payment out of the said customs etc., and all heritable annuities shall be fully paid. (fn. 2)
