To the sheriff of York. Order under a pain of 1,000l., without
delay to cause proclamation to be made, that no man of whatsoever estate, degree or condition shall upon his allegiance and

make unlawful assemblies, routs and threatenings or do mischief
to John cardinal archbishop of York or any serving in his church

property, chattels or possessions, and if he shall find any so
doing, order to take with him the posse comitatus, and without
delay to arrest and imprison them until further order, certifying
the king and council under seal of all his dealing; as the king is
informed that a number of children of iniquity, breakers of the
peace and enemies of God and man, going about to sow dissension
among the people have invented and published tales devoid of
truth against the cardinal to stir up, as they have, the hearts
and minds of the hearers against him and his church and against
them who serve God therein, by reason whereof a number of
men armed and arrayed in manner of war have gathered unlawful
assemblies and routs for such mischief as they might and may do
to him, his men, servants and tenants within the county of York
and elsewhere in their persons, goods and possessions, have
broken and cast down his park and mill at Rypon, his enclosures
and houses there and at Bysshopesthorp and elsewhere within
the county, hunted, taken and carried away the deer in that
park, assaulted, beaten, wounded, maimed and evilly treated his
men, servants and tenants, so that the life of many of them is
despaired of, laid wait for his men etc. and others of them within
the county and elsewhere in secret places to beat, wound and
slay or maim them, and daily so do, inflicting upon them such
wrong and grievance that for their lives his men and servants
have not for a long while dared and dare not now travail about
his business, nor his tenants to do their tillage or make other
profit, and doing other intolerable mischief in contempt of God
and the king and for an evil example to others, and the king's
will is to resist their malice and to chastise them according to
their deserts, as he is bound to do. |
