'To alle true cristenmen to whoos knowlege these present
lettres shall come I John Edwyn clerke sende gretyng in oure
lord everlastynge. For as myche as it is meritorye to sey the
truthe in every mater and cause and namely in suche maters and
causes of right as buthe of grete charge and of conscience and
where inne men for lacke of evidence and of due informacione
by lyclynes myght erre, and more overe it myght be by possibilite
cause of periurie, the whiche god defende, therfore I the seid John
Edwyn hoole of mynde and be good deliberacioune declare howe
that John Zemme somtyme person of the chirche of Felbrigg
was seised of a maner called Wynchesters with the appurtenaunce
in his demesne as of fee, and so there of seised by his dede endented
betwene hym of that one partie and me the seid John Edwyn, by
the name of John Edwyn vicar of the chirche of Gelden Murdon,
Thomas Markaund clerk of the college of Seint Benett in Caumbrigge, Thomas atte Cros of Baketon and Philipp Edwyn of
Ocolte of that other partye, where of the date is at Mendylsham
the Thursday next after the feste of Seint Bernabe the apostell
the yere of the reign of kynge Harry the fifte the ix., graunted and
yafe and by that chartre confermed to me the forseid John
Edwyn, Thomas, Thomas and Philipp the maner aforeseid with
the appurtenauncez, by the name of the maner of the seid John
Zemme sumtyme Wynchesters with all his and every appurtenauncez in the towne of Mendlysham, Stonham, Jernegoun
and Wedryngsete as in meses londes arable medews pastures
wodes wardes maritages releves eschetys rentys and services
to the seid maner in any maner langyng, to be hadde and holden
all the forseid maner with all his appurtenauncez as it is aboveseid
to me the forseid John Edwyn, Thomas, Thomas and Philipp oure
heires and oure assignes of the cheff lorde of the fee by the services
therof due and of right customable for evermore, under such
condicioun that if I the seid John Edwyn and Thomas Thomas and
Philipp sholde paye or do to be payed to the forseid John Zemme
his executours or attourneys atte Felbrigge ccxx.li. of laufull
mony of England in xj. yeres next folowynge after the date of the
seid dede, that is to witte every yere xx.li. atte the festes of Seint
Michell and Pasquz by even porcions, the first tyme of payment
thenne to begynne atte the fest of seint Michell Archangell in
the yende of that yere thenne next folowynge, that thenne the
seid dede endented and seisine therof hadde and delivered in his
strengthe sholde abyde, and if it shulde happe me the seid John
Edwyn and Thomas Thomas and Philipp oure heires and assignes
in the payment of the forseid ccxx.li. atte eny terme or by
amoneth after any terme in parte or in alle to fayle, that then hit
sholde be lawfull to the aforeseid John Zemme his heires and
assignes in the seid maner with all his appurtenauncez as hit is
aboveseid to reentre and in his first aste to holde and retener
as he fyrst held noghtwithstandyng the forseid dede endented
and the seisine therof hed, by vertue of the whiche graunte
yefte and confirmacioun I the forseid John Edwyn and Thomas,
Thomas and Philipp were seised of the seid maner with the
appurtenauncez in oure demesne as of fee, the seid John Zemme
after dyed, and for asmyche as cxx.li. of the seid ccxx.li. for vj.
the laste yeres of the seid xj. yeres to the seid John Zemme were
behynde unpayed, wherfore Clarees Sextayn for nonpayment
therof and for x.li. of the seid ccxx.li. atte the feste of Pasque the
yere of the kyng that nowe es the fyfte to the seid John Zemme
were bihynde unpayed after the dethe of the seid John Zemme as
cosyn and heire of the same John Zemme, that is to witte doughter
of Herry brother of the said John Zemme, in to the seid maner
with the appurtenauncez entred as yenne it was lefull for herre,
also for more playn declaracioun of the seid Clarees right whiles
that I the seid John Edwyn and my seid confeffes were in possessione of the seid maner with the appurtenauncez diverse acciones
were brought and sewed after cours of lawe ayenste one Richard
Poley as ane untreuman, and we pleted to have issue and sued
to brynge inne acontre to passe theron, atte the whiche tyme the
seid Richard alleged ane forged and ane untrue relees to have
be maide atte Westchestre by the seid Thomas Markaunt the
whiche afterward was proved false and untrue, and whenne he
say that matere was founde ayenste hym he caste inne a
proteccioun to put all my sutes in discontinuaunce and to ane
entent to were oute me seid John Edwyn with suche subtile
untrue and false menys wherfore by cost of suyt and to anyentise
me the seid John Edwyn for evere after this seid proteccioun
caste forthe it fortuned that the seid Richard Poley and Robert
Crane come to me the seid John Edwyn atte London and there
in the chirche and the chirche yerde of Paule desirynge of me to
have suche astate as thenne I hedd in the seid manere londes and
tenementes I the seid John Edwyn thenne answerynge to hem that
myne astate and right was of no value ne strenghth, for asmyche
as I the seid John Edwyn and my confeffes hadde fayled of oure
paymentz aforeseid as auenste the seid John Zemme, whereby
the seid John Zemme his heires and assignes of right thenne
most have and enioye the seid maner landes and tenementz by
wey of a reentre, and for that cause I durste ne myght comon
in that mater with the seid Richard Poley and Robert Crane,
nevere the lese atte here instaunce all though I hadde no right
I sealed hem a dede and yafe state to the seid Poley and toke of
hym therfore and for neyhyng of my gode c.li., also yef so shall
fortune here after the seid Poley to shewe the seid relees so
contreved and supposed to have be made by the seid Thomas
Markaunt or els any other relees also contreved and falsly
supposyd to have be made by the seid John Zemme somtyme
shewed atte the Temple atte London the whiche the forseid
Richard Poley seid and affermed by fore the counselles of bothe
the seid parties, that is to say of Robert Sextayn thenne pleyntee
of Sheryngham of that one partye and the seid Richard Poley
of the tother partie, to have bene delivered to hym by me the seid
John Edwyn in which reles the counseill of the seid Robert
Sextayn gretely dowtynge sende for me the seid John Edwyn
in all haiste for tryall of the seid relees, wherfore at that tyme
when I come to the Temple at London the seid Richard Poley
fledd and withdrue hym and wold noght abide the tryall, noghtwithstondynge that I the seid John Edwyn atte the same tyme
made my declaracioun ayenste the seid false relese in the presencez
of the seid counselles and also afore other notable audiencez in
London, noman of charite yeve no credence ne faith to the seid
releses ne to the circumstaunces of hem for thei be both untrue
and forged as I have declared afore in this my writyng and my
dede as I will answere afore the hegh juge in the dredefull day of
jugement. In witnes of whiche thynges above writen atte the
especiall requeste and instaunce of Thomas Trenchemere squier
and Robert Sextayn aforeseid to this present writyng I have
putte my sealle. Yeven at Caumbrigge in the day of seint Nicholas
busshoppe the yere of the reigne of kyng Harry the sixte after
