Notarial instrument, attested in a high chamber within the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England at Clerkenwell by London, in presence, on 20 August 1450, 4 Pope Nicholas V, of Robert Langstrothir and William Walsale, literate persons of the dioceses of York and Lincoln, by Thomas Eggecomb, clerk, of the diocese of Exeter, and notary public (whose sign is here copied), reciting a commission of brother John de Lastico master of the Hospital, dated the convent at Rhodes 8 February 1449, written upon paper with his round seal of black wax covered with paper whereon were the words: 'Sigillum fratris Johannis de Lastico magistri Hospitalis Jerusalem,' and read on 6 August that year in the same place in presence of brothers Robert Botill prior of the Hospital, John Langstrothir preceptor of the preceptory of Balshal and Grafton and receiver for the common treasury in the Hospital, and brother Thomas de Talbot (text follows), whereby upon complaint of the proctors and conservator of the common treasury that Thomas de Talbot, prior of the priory of Hireland, has not contented them, as he promised and was bound to do, wherefore he ought to be deprived and the priory conferred upon brother Thomas Fitzghirart, the master commands the said Robert and John to cause his letters patent to be presented to the said prior publicly in presence of a notary, moving him once, twice, thrice and peremptorily within one month from that date to pay to the said receiver all sums of money due and unpaid, and to give more binding security for time to come; and reciting that after the same was read the commissioners did move the said prior so to do, and he did promise payment of all sums from him due by reason of his priory to that date, or to find security to the said receiver for all then or thereafter due, and swore upon the cross of his habit in presence of William Cecyll esquire, Thomas Berners and Bartholomew Knyght, literate persons of the dioceses of Lincoln and Winchester; and reciting that on 20 August that year in the same place the said receiver did publicly acknowledge that he had received of the said prior certain bonds for the money due for the time he averred that he had held the priory of Hireland, and for five years next following.
