John Johnson of London 'bocher,' to Thomas archbishop of Canterbury. Recognisance for 40l., to be levied etc. in the city of London.
Condition, that he shall abide and perform the award of the archbishop and his counsel touching all trespasses and offences by him and his servants committed against the archbishop to this date.
John Carleton and Joan his wife, to Hugh Wyche, Ralph Verney, John Derby and John Shelley, citizens and mercers of London, their heirs and assigns. Charter of demise with warranty of a grove of wood in the parish of Berkyng containing 2 acres of land enclosed with hedges and ditches on either side, one head abutting upon land of John Legge on the north and the other upon a lane sometime of Simon 'in the Hale' on the south, and it lies lengthwise between land of John Malmayn on the west and the high way from Illeford to 'Berkyng Clay' on the east, which grove the grantors had jointly by demise of John Sampkyn and John Cole of Esthamme co. Declaration of George Heth squyer, that where as 24 Novembre, 10 Henry VI, at Wetynge co. Norffolk byfore William Galion eschetour it was founde by inquisicion that Katerine wyfe of John Cokerell shulde have holde at hir deth, that is the Satirday aftyr Saynt Michell, 6 Henry VI, the manoirs of Boules and Walcotes in Litell Snorynge, which is holde be knyght service of the priour and covent of oure Lady of Walsyngham, and that the seide George shulde have be her cosyn and next heir, he was never cosyn nor heir to her nor of hir blode, but when the inquisicion was take he knewe right not therof and was at London, that William Dallyng, Maister Clement Charlez and Crane a lernyd man comme to him and saide that the duk of Suffolk shulde sende fer him, and badde him to be ware for he shulde be straitly examyned, and he askyde theym wherfore, and Dallynge seide that he was founde next heir to yonge Katerine Cokerell, that the abbot of Bury and the priour of Walsyngham shulde have part of the land by eschete and the duc wolde see an other meane therfore, and he saide agayne he durst not for he is a tenaunt to the abbot, and Clement Charlz archedekene of Sudbury seide that the abbot shulde be reuled as the duc wolde magre his hede, and doo therin as the duc wyll commaunde, that when he came to the duc he saide unto the said George that he shulde be reulyd aftyr him, for he was founde next heir by his advis, where as in dede he was not, and therfore he shulde be bounde in a statute marchaunt of 1,000 marc to make noon estate nor relees to any persone but by thadvyse of the duc, to the which he prayed the duc to holde him excused, for he wolde never be bounde what so ever he dede, and the duc seide that if he wolde not be ruled by hym he shulde be so hevy lord unto him that he shulde not be able to bere it, and went unto his chambyr in the Olde Vyntrye, and dede feche forth a messebooke and had him ley his hand on the booke and swere to make noon estate nyver relese withoute his advise, and he wolde see that he shulde be savyde harmles, and had him swere and here what he shulde say, and undyrstandyng that his hevy lordship shulde be importable, for fere therof he ded swere to fulfille his desyre, and whan he had sworne the duc layde his hande uppon the book, and seide as he was true knyght and by the book he shulde save him harmeles, and he shuld have hadde 40l. for his labour, but he shulde goo by thadvyse of his counsell into the chauncerie and aske lyvere of the lande, and than the duc sente him forthe, and Crane with othirmore of his counsell with him, that he asked lyvere of the lande, wherfore ther was paied in to the hamper of the chauncerie 2 marc by the handys of his counsell, and thanne he went home, that anoone aftir processe went oute ageyns him in grene waxe for his homage and relief, by force wherof he was distrayned uppon his owne landys and not uppon the landys he was founde heir to, and asferre as he understonds Sir Thomas Tudenham knyght and Richard Doket laboured alway to the sheryfs that he shulde be distreyned uppon his owne landys, that Sir Thomas hath a maner of the saide landes called Wankford worth by yere 20 marc, and Richard Doket had the manoirs of Boules and Walcotes, which is in value 20l. by yere and ought of right to be by their clayme the priour of Walsyngham, that aftyr that the duc of York, my lorde at that tyme, beyng comme out of Irlande, ridynge to oure Lady of Walsyngham in pylgrymage, and the seide George waytinge upon hym as his duete was, at his comynge home Richard Doket of Copdok and Roger Bukwode of Euston come to him unto Mildenhale there he dwelles, and praiede Maister Thomas Ryngstede vycary of the toune to entrete him to make a relees to Richard Doket and his feffees of the seide manoirs in Norffolk, yevynge to him a certayn somme for the relees and amendys of the grete lossys which he had by them, and they war bounde to him in severall obligacions, of which he was contente except the last which conteyned 12l. 10s., that aftir the day of payement the said Richard and Roger of malyce came ageyn to him, and thret for suche services doone to my lorde of Yorke he shulde be hanged, drawe and quartered withoute that he wolde delyvere to them the obligacion and make unto them a generall acquitaunce, that he aunswered, 'I trust to Goddys mercy, and dar justifie for my trouthe that I never deservyd it, and trust to God it shulde not ligh in ther power,' that they saide he trusted in the generall pardon, and thei made othe thogh he had the pardon sealid with a cartefull of wax it shulde not avayle him, with othir ungodly wordys, that by cause of these dredes which reyned in that partie in thoo dayes he delyvered to them the obligacion, and made unto them a generall acquietance.
