Will of Walter Metyngham, freeman of the city of London and wandbearer, 'virgebank' of St. Stephen's Free chapel, Westminster, revoking a former will dated 13 December, 1473, concerning a messuage with four shops, cellars and solars in the parish of St. Dunstan's in the East, London; which now he bequeathes to Alice his wife and Matthew Ernest her son for term of life of the longest liver, if they remain single. Otherwise, the messuage shall pass immediately to the dean and canons of St. Stephen's chapel, on condition of observing an anniversary of master John Wylly late canon of the same, on 31 December or 2 January, with placebo and dirige and requiems by note, and on the morrow a mass of requiem, with distributions herein specified to canons, vicars, chaplains of Lyndwood chantry, clerks, choristers, wandbearers and bellringers so attending: and a like anniversary for the souls of himself, Alice his wife and Thomas Ernest her former husband in the low chapel of St. Mary beneath St. Stephen's. Further the dean etc. shall pay 23s. at four terms of the year, to the master, brethren and sisters of St. Katherine's hospital by the Tower, to increase the salary of a priest at SS. Fabian and Sebastian's altar for the souls of himself, Alice, master John Wylly, Thomas Ernest, master William Fallan clerk, Walter Martyn and Thomas Champeneys, according to indentures between them: the said hospital to distrain on the premises should the said dean etc. fail in this undertaking. And the dean shall further find a waxcandle or 'taper' weighing 5 lbs. to burn at St. Mary's Image in the chapel of 'le Pewe' at the feasts of our Lady etc. in the years . . . . And John Pryour, couper of London, who now has the capital messuage for a term of twenty years, and John Well, draper of the same, who has two messuages for a term of twelve years, shall enjoy the same peaceably according to the effect of the indentures. And this testament shall be enrolled in the Guildhall, according to the custom of the city, at the expense of the executors, who may distrain for their expenses therein on the premises. They are also to supervise the repairs to the said premises and make distraints to carry out such as are needed, and should they refuse, then the master and brethren of St. Thomas' hospital shall carry out the same, with further provisions for transferring the estate, should the dean and chapter of St. Stephen's fail to carry out the will, to St. Katherine's hospital, and should these latter also fail, to St. Thomas' hospital. Here the entry inserts a special prayer to be said at the perpetual weekly mass. All charters and releases, evidences and muniments are to be delivered to the said dean and chapter immediately, with remainder as above to the master of St. Katherine's hospital and St. Thomas' successively. The testator's executors are Richard Martyn, Maculin Cosyn, John Gourll clerks, Robert Waldeby chaplain, Nicholas Gaynesford esquire, William Kerver merchant, Thomas Champeneys gentleman and William Philip goldsmith.
