Somerset, and John Edwardys, 'yoman' of the same, so that they appear in chancery the octaves of St. John Baptist next to answer John Doket, servant of John bishop of Lincoln, the chancellor, concerning the sum of 36l. 15s. 4d. which they owe the said John and unjustly withhold, and to do as the court shall decide in this matter.

To all and singular mayors, provosts, sheriffs, bailiffs and customers, controllers and scrutineers of customs and subsidies in the port of Southampton and in singular places and creeks to that port adjoining for the time being. Order to cause proclamation to be made (English text follows). The king our lord in straightest wise chargeth that if it happen from henceforth any of the king's army now or hereafter haunting the seas, to bring into the said port or creeks, any being under the king's amity or safe conduct as of the nations of Alemayne or Italie, of Braband, Flaundrez, Holand, Seland, Heynaud, Frysshe, or the realms of Spayn or Portugale, that all such ships and goods in them being, be put in sure and safe keeping, and not given, bought, sold nor despoiled among the men of war nor any of the king's liegemen or subjects unto such time as it be decreed by the king's council what shall be done with such ships and goods so brought to the same port, under pain of restitution to be made by the officers of the said port of all such ships and goods so distributed, and informing the king of the true value of the said ships and goods.

Order to pay Edward Brampton, knight of the king's body, an annuity of 100l. out of the subsidy aforesaid, and the arrears since 20 August last: on which date by letters patent the king granted him the above annuity for a term of twenty years complete.

Order to pay Berwyk; the king's servant, alias Ralph Gosse, one of the king's poursuivants at arms, an annual rent of 10l. a year for his life out of the revenues and issues of that county and the arrears since 12 August last: as on that date by letters patent, the king, considering his good and dutiful service, and approving of the skill and learning by him showed in that office, for which he has as yet received neither wages nor fees, granted him the above annuity, that he may more swiftly and intently carry out the king's business.

To the receivers, farmers or other the occupiers of the demesnes or manors of St. Margaret Stretton and Middelton Brymmesfeld co. Wilts for the time being. Order to pay Thomas Crescy a shilling a day out of the revenues and profits of those manors, and the arrears since 14 April, 11 Edward IV: as the late king by letters patent dated 12 July, 11 Edward IV, confirmed by King Richard on 21 February last, appointed his servant Thomas Crescy to the office of keeper of the beds within the castle of Wyndesore co. Berks, to be occupied from 14 April that year for his life by himself or sufficient deputy; which office he held and has exercised, to receive during his life the fees due and accustomed thereto pertaining for himself and a groom out of the issues of the manors aforesaid, with all regards, profits, commodities and emoluments in as full and ample a manner as Giles French in 22 Richard II received therefore, and the late John Austyn in 9 Edward IV: and by inspection of the rolls it is shown that 9d. a day was allowed for wages of the keeper, and 3d. a day as wages for a groom in the above cases, as certified by the then treasurer and barons of the exchequer.

Order to pay the king's servant Edward Kyngdon, yeoman of the crown, 6d. a day for his life out of the fee farm and increment of the above town, and the arrears since 4 March, 1 Edward IV: as the late king by letters patent, dated 25 July, 1 Edward IV, made him the above grant for his life, since which time he has continually exercised that office, and on 9 November last King Richard has confirmed the grant.

To the sheriff of Oxford and Berks for the time being. Order to pay Thomas Croft esquire 6d. a day for his life out of the issues and revenues of those counties and the arrears: as the late king by letters patent dated 12 May, 9 Edward IV, confirmed by King Richard on 26 June last, granted him the office of ranger of the forests of Shottere and Stowode co. Oxford, to be occupied by himself or sufficient deputy for his life with such fees and wages as were received in the time of Edward III at the sheriff's hands: and it is learnt in the Great Roll and sheriffs accounts in 42 Edward III, that 6d. a day was allotted to John Thorleton for his wages as ranger of the above forests, as appears in a certificate of the then treasurer and barons of the exchequer.

To the escheator in Cornwall. Order to take fealty of Sir William Houghton and Joan his wife and to give them livery of the lands of John Colshull, brother of Joan, taken into the king's hands; as by an inquisition taken before the escheator, it was learnt that John Colshull knight held no lands of the king in chief in that county the day he died in demesne or in service; but long before his death, by fine levied in the king's court at Westminster in the octave of Hilary, 19 Henry VI, before Richard Neweton and other justices of the common Bench, John Colshull, son of Sir John Colshull, and John Corke acknowledged that the manors of Byename, Stratton and St. Mary Wyke, the island of Sully, and a messuage, two carucates of land, 20 acres of meadow and 100 acres of wood in Swanecote with the advowson of the church of St. Mary Wyke, were the right of Nicholas Assheton, Thomas Cokayne and Robert Coleyne by gift and quitclaim of the said John Colshull and John Corke: and the said Nicholas Assheton, Thomas and Robert by the same fine granted the above manors, island and advowson to John Colshull and the heirs of his body, with remainder to Joan his sister and her heirs, and then to Thomas Nevill kinsman and heir of William Nevill knight of Pycall, and the right heirs of Guy de Blakemonstre, rector of Lansalwis, successively to be held by them in capital demesne as of fee. By virtue of which grant John Colshull was seised of the above premises in his demesne: and so died without issue; and Joan his sister, now wife of William Houghton, became seised thereof duly: and the said manors and advowson are held of the king by simple fealty as of the castle of Launceston, parcel of the duchy of Cornwall, and the island of Sully by fealty of the king at a rent of 50 puffins or 6s. 8d. a year, payable at Michaelmas for all services.

To the receivers, farmers, occupiers or approwers of the manor or demesnes of Wrottell, Haveryng, Boyton, Hadlegh, Raylegh and Rocheford co. Essex, of the manors etc. of Tunbriche, Penshurst, Middelton and Merdon and of the hundred of Middelton co. Kent for the time being. Order to pay Robert Brakenbery, the king's servant, 100l. a year for his life out of the revenues of the manors etc. aforesaid and the proportion of the arrears from 17 July, 1 Richard III, to 9 March last: as the king, for his good and faithful services, appointed him to the office of constable of the Tower of London, to be occupied by himself or sufficient deputy for term of his life with wages and fees of 100l. a year: and from the 17 July, 1 Richard III, to 9 March last, the said Robert Brakenbury has received no wages for the exercise of his office.

Order to pay Thomas Danyell 12d. a day for his life out of the revenues of the manors and hundred aforesaid, and the arrears, from 7 July, 1 Richard III, to 10 October last: since by letters patent of that date the king appointed him to the office of mason of the works in the Tower of London, within the realm and elsewhere, to be occupied by himself or by sufficient deputy, with all wages and fees due as of all time out of the revenues aforesaid such as Thomas Jurdan, who last held that office, received. And from 7 July, 1 Richard III, to 10 October last, the said Thomas Danyell has not yet received any fees: and it is learnt in the rolls of 41 Edward III and 1 Richard II, that 12d. a day was allotted for that office, as appears by certificate of the then treasurer and barons of the exchequer in the reign of Edward IV.

Order to pay Richard Boyvyle esquire and Grisilda his wife 20l. a year out of the revenues and profits of the said demesnes, and the arrears since Michaelmas, 20 Edward IV: as on that date the late king by letters patent, confirmed by King Richard on 20 April, 1 Richard III, made them the above grant, to be received by them during the minority of Edward son of Isabel Nevill, late wife of George duke of Clarence, deceased.

To the bailiffs and burgesses of Shrewsbury for the time being. Order to pay eight marks a year and the arrears out of the fee farm of that town to the perpetual chaplain of the chapel of Hedistaston in the parish of Wemme co. Salop in the diocese of Coventry and Lychfeld: as on 7 September last, by letters patent, to show his devotion to the glorious Virgin Mary, mother of God, the king founded the above chapel to be served by a perpetual chaplain bound to say divine service each day for the safety of the king and Anne his queen during their lives, and of other benefactors, and to pray for their souls when they shall have passed away, and of Richard duke of York, the king's father, and others: for which purpose the king has assigned eight marks a year to be received by the chaplain at the hands of the bailiffs of Shrewsbury and has given him special license to carry out his duties without interference or molestation of him and his heirs, justices, escheators, sheriffs etc. as is shown in letters patent.

To the escheator in Stafford. Order to assign dower to Elizabeth late wife of Fulk Bourgchier, knight of Fitzwaren, later wife of John Sapcote, esquire of the king's body, of Aylton co. Huntingdon, and late of Baundon and Tewestoke co. Devon, in presence of the nearest friends of John Bourgchier his son and heir, according to a valuation of the said Fulk's lands: since the king of November 23 last, pardoned the said John Sapcote and Elizabeth, the breach of his peace, for all trespasses, offences and forfeitures committed before 21 February, 1 Richard III.

Order to pay John Neffeld, the king's servant, 50 marks a year for his life out of the issues and farms of those counties, and the arrears since 5 April last: on which date the king appointed him to be one of the esquires of his body, to occupy that office for his life with wages aforesaid at the hands of the above sheriff.
