Indenture between Sir Hugh Conwey and William Holt, whereby
it is agreed that William shall cause all persons having interest in
all such lands as Sir Edward Holt his father held at time of his
death, by counsel of Hugh Conwey, to ensure the same to Sir
Thomas Pole, James Legh, rector of Rawstorne, John Mynshull
esquire, William son of Adam Bostok, William Mynshull, vicar of
Bowdon, John Chapman priest, William Catelyn mercer and
Nicholas Fryston salter, each of London, in fee, to the intent that
if William Holt have heirs to his body, Sir Thomas etc. shall be
feoffees to the use of him and his heirs in fee simple, and if not,
for his life only, with remainder to Sir Hugh Conwey without
impeachment of waste: and if William hereafter have issue, then
Sir Thomas etc. shall be enfeoffed to the use of Hugh, they to take
the issues, until Hugh has received 300 marks thereof, unless
William or his heirs pay the same to him in ready money, which
Sir Hugh has paid for the same. Also it is agreed that the
feoffees after the death of William shall allow five bastards of his
to have 'ichon' (each) of the lands to the yearly value of four

male: also of the manors of Alkyngton, Camme and Hynton in
that county and of Portbury co. Somerset, to the said earl, Anne
his wife, Thomas archbishop of York, George Fitzhugh, dean of
Lincoln, and Thomas Fenys esquire: and for lack of issue to
Anne with remainder to the king (as above) or the earl's right
heirs: the manors of Slymbrigge and Hurst co. Gloucester, to
the earl, James bishop of Norwich, Christopher and Robert

under like conditions. And his highness further pardons by these

of Haunce co. Bedford, with all lands and tenements, rents and
reversions, knights' fees, advowsons, profits and commodities
thereto pertaining for 1000 marks, whereof 500 are paid out of
hand, and the residue Sir Reynold will pay on 28 January next:
and by Pentecost the earl will make him or his assigns a sure
estate in land thereof, by fine, recovery or lease at the latter's
cost, and will discharge the said manor of all fees and annuities
upon the same, save a fee of ten marks granted by John late duke
of Norfolk, to John Peke and Thomas Hoo for term of their lives
and another of the same amount to Richard Swansey. |

Reynold a messuage of 400 acres of land, 5 acres of meadow, and

William Hert: which messuage the earl recovered at Hilary last

Indenture between John Dynham, lord of the manor and patron
of the abbey of Hertlond co. Devon (as his ancestors founded the
same) and the prior and convent thereof, whereby, there being
debate at the vacancy of the abbey on the death of abbot Richard
Tavton, the chapter thereof submitted to the arbitration of
Charles Dynham, John Denys of Orlegh, Richard Wydeslade,
John Leigny, William Coffyn and John Wydeslade who decreed,
that at any future vacancy the prior should notify the said lord,
his heirs or assigns, as founders, begging licence to proceed with
the election of a new abbot, but in his absence or refusal, the prior
might proceed to the election despite his refusal; and having
elected a suitable man, he should notify the said lord by letters
signed with the common seal of the abbey to procure his approval:
which the said lord should give without delay: and if refused, the
election should stand good notwithstanding his objection: and
lord Dynham will remit to Richard now abbot any rights he held
with regard to vacancies, presentations or patronages, reserving
all his former rights in future elections: to which the parties

Carlile held of the lease of Elizabeth wife of Walter Lounde, to
hold from Michaelmas next for twenty-one years at a yearly rent
of 66s. 8d.: plus the rents and services due to the chief lords of
the fee: and the said Stephen grants that Robert may lop the
trees standing on the tenement saving apple, pear and walnut
trees, and may take all windfalls without lett: and Robert will
keep the tenement and its houses in good repair and shall not sell
nor alienate the same during his tenancy; whereunto he has
