Indenture between the king and Gerald (Garard) earl of Kyldare, deputy lieutenant in Ireland: assent to the marriage of the earl's son Gerald, who was brought up 'in his yought and tender age' at the king's court, to Elizabeth Zouche, kinswoman to Margaret the king's mother, to be solemnized before 1 Aug. next at Margaret's manor of Colyweston, 'where she now kepith her honorable houshold'; the king to bear the cost of their apparel and of the ceremonies; the earl to make estate before Whitsuntide next to his son and Elizabeth and the heirs male of their two bodies of the lordships and manors of Moylaghe co. Meath and Rathamghan co. Kildare of the clear yearly value of 100 m., of which they shall take the issues from the date of this indenture, and also of the lordships or manors of Portlester and Moynalwey co. Meath of the same yearly value, of which the earl will take the issues during his life; if the premises prove to be worth less than 200 m., the earl will grant other lands to make up the deficit; other surety to be given as required; the king to make a like estate of lands in England to the yearly value of 40l., having given the earl 100 m. at the day of making the indenture. Indenture witnessing demise for 15 years from Michaelmas last of the 'seignorye,' castle, lordship and manor of Cardif, the county of Glomorgan and the lordship of Morgannok with royalties, revenues, profits of the sessions etc. appurtenant and lands called 'Malyfantes Londes' which Sir Charles held by a lease now expired, except the office of porter at Cardif castle and other offices granted by patent to Robert Jones; yearly farm 1,100 m.; right of distress etc.; Sir Charles or his deputy to do and minister true, equal and indifferent justice to all the king's subjects within the premises, not pardoning any that shall commit murder, robbery or heinous felony (i.e. felony done, after a first pardon); if any part of the premises be evicted out of the king's hands, the farm shall be abated in proportion. Indenture witnessing grant at farm with warranty from Christmas last for the life of the longer liver of Milton and Marham manors with appurtenances in Milton, Marham, Caster, Etton, Maxsey, Norborough and Depyngate co. Northampton, with the wharfage and profit of the wharf and water of Gunwade and the fishing and fowling there, except the advowsons of the parish church and St. Guthlac's chantry in Marham, for an annual rent of a red rose at the Nativity of St. John Baptist, if it be duly asked; Robert and Anne may sell timber, wood and underwood growing in Marham woods to a yearly value not exceeding 10l. and take what is needed for repair of the manors and their appurtenances with reasonable 'heybote, housebote, ploughbote and cartebote'; provided they pay William, his heirs and assigns, for any sales exceeding 10l. and for any damage done to the 'springis' through failure to fence and close the woods after felling; after their decease they shall leave in the manor 'all such implementis of household as apperteynith to the houses of office there, aswell to the hall, parlor, chambers, chapell, kychen and all other houses of office,' as specified in indentures of even date, and also 'all the markis and games of swannes . . . goyng, beyng or bredyng withyn the maners as uppon the water of Gunwade and Burgh Water betwene Walmysford and Thorney Crosse . . . provided allweye that during the lyfes of the seid Robert and Anne it shall not be lefull to them . . . to make noon alienacion, graunte or gyfte of eny of the seid markes and games of swannes except the signettes cummyng yerely of the seid games'; and they shall keep the premises in good repair, making all the buildings defensible against wind and rain; mutual bonds for performance in 1,000 m. (of which they acknowledge receipt) at the sealing and 400l. (for which William and John Skevyngton of London, merchant, are bound by recognizance in Chancery) in annual instalments of 100l. payable at the font of St. Paul's cathedral London between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on 29 Sept., 1504, and in the three years next ensuing; before St. John Baptist next estate in fee simple is to be made, the premises to be discharged, except of the life grants of 20s. a year to Henry Pollerd and the bailiwick of Gunwade to Henry More, and the evidences etc. delivered to the master of Fodryngay college to be kept there in a locked chest, during the vendors' lives; mutual bonds for performance in 1,000 m.
