Indenture between Giles lord Daubeney, the king's chamberlain, Charles lord Herbert, Thomas Lovell knight, treasurer of the Household, and Edmund Dudeley and Henry Wyat esquires on the part of the king, and Richard earl of Kent executor of his father George late earl of Kent: whereas George bought from the king the wardship and marriage of Elizabeth daughter and heir of Edward Trussell esquire, Richard now gives it freely to the other parties to the king's use; and whereas he is indebted to the king in 2,500 m. on the surety of certain manors (as above, No. 473), the king pardons 1,000l. of this debt and grants terms for payment of the remaining 1,000 m., for which Richard binds himself in 1,000l.; if Elizabeth die within four years, a further 1,000l. shall be leviable from the said manors to the king's use. Whereas the earl held the castles and lordship of Swannesey in Gower, the lordships and manors of Kylwey, Crekehowell, Tretour, Englisshe Talgarthe, Lantilio in Grosemonde and Wysham, both within Monmoth lordship, Mayndefe in Burgevenny lordship, the castle and lordships of Cheppestowe and Tydenham, Raglond, Dyngstowe, Penrose, Millescourte and Radwyke and divers other lordships and manors in Wales and the march, which have now descended to lady Elizabeth, it is agreed that Sir Walter and dame Anne his wife before St. James the Apostle next shall quitclaim them to lord Herbert and lady Elizabeth and her heirs; thereafter lord Herbert and lady Elizabeth shall make estate to Sir Walter of Chespestowe and Tydenham for life without impeachment of waste, with reversion to the grantors; likewise they shall make estate to eight persons, four to be named by either party, of Raglond, Dyngstowe, Penrose, Millescourte and Radwike to the use of Walter and Anne and the heirs male of his body, with a life interest to any future wife to whom he may wish to assign a jointure, with remainder in default of such issue to lord Herbert and lady Elizabeth and her heirs. Indenture tripartite witnessing the last will of dame Mabel Dacre widow of Sir Humphrey late lord Dacre knight: with all the issues etc. of the lands specified in a deed of feoffment (No. 455) there shall be found an able and honest priest to sing and say divine service in the monastery of Lanercorft for ever; the first priest to be appointed by herself, his successors by her son Thomas now lord Dacre and his heirs holding the castle and lordship of Naward or (in case of minority or default for other cause) by the prior of Carlisle and his successors; the office to be voided by acceptance of another benefice or salary, by departure or absence for more than 40 days in the year without reasonable cause, or by continued misconduct after warning by the said prior; the priest to say mass daily at the altar of the Trinity, and at the first lavatory of every mass to say the 'spalme' De profundis with versicles, orisons and collects thereto belonging, rehearsing these words in English: 'for the gud estate and prousperite of Dame Mabell lady Dacre Foundres of this Chaunterie, Sir Humfrey Dacre late lord Dacre and of Gillesland her late husbond, there faders, moders and children soules, the soules of al the benefactours of this Chaunterie and of all Cristen soules'; placebo, dirige and morrow mass to be said daily for a year after her death, with a Saynt Gregory Trentall in the utas of principal feasts, and thereafter weekly; once a year, on the Monday after Trinity, they shall be said by the prior and convent and other secular priests to the number of thirteen in all, on payment, from the chantry priest's salary of 8d. to the prior, 4d. each to other priests, 2d. to the clerk of the choir and 6d. for ringing the bell; like payment of 3s. 4d. to be made to the Friars Minors of Carlisle for like service; this ordinance to be named 'Mabelles Chaunterie'; the last four survivors of the sixteen feoffees (as in No. 455) shall enfeoff other twelve to be named by the prior of Carlisle and his successors, and so on for ever; the three parts of their indenture and of the deed to remain with Thomas Parre of Kendal and his heirs and the priors of Lanercoft and Carlisle.
