Colby is a small parish adjoining Appleby on the W.

Secular

(1). Nether Hoff, house, at the S. end of Colby hamlet, is of two storeys with attics; the walls are of rubble and the roofs are slate-covered. It was built late in the 17th century and retains most of its original stone windows. The doorway on the N. has a moulded architrave and pulvinated frieze, but the cornice and pediment have been removed; the tympanum is re-set at a higher level and bears the initials and date G. and I.B. 1683. Inside the building are some exposed ceiling-beams. The original well-staircase has turned balusters, moulded handrails and square newels with ball-terminals. Two fireplaces have original moulded surrounds. The roof has slender principals with a pronounced bend.

Condition—Good.
