PRAYERS.
Sir Richard Verney's Claim to the Barony of Broke:
The Lord Marquis of Normanby presented to the
House a Petition of Sir Richard Verney, claiming the
Barony of Broke, and His Majesty's Reference to this
House thereupon.
Which was read, as followeth; (videlicet,)
His Petition to the King:
"To the King's most Excellent Majesty.
"The humble Petition of Sir Richard Verney
Knight, Cousin and next Heir to Sir Robert
Willughby Knight, Lord Broke;
"Humbly shewing,
"That Sir Robert Willughby Knight of the Garter,
Your Petitioner's Ancestor, whose Heir he is, was
summoned to Parliament, by the Title of Lord Broke,
A° 7 Hen. VII, as a Baron, the Writ being directed
Rob'to Willughby de Broke Chevalier; and, being also
summoned to other ensuing Parliaments in the said
King's Reign, died seised of the said Title and Dignity to him and his Heirs; to whom succeeded Sir
Robert Willughby Knight, his Son and Heir; who,
being likewise summoned to Parliament by the Title
of Lord Broke, Temp. Hen. VIII, sat accordingly, and
died also seised of the said Title and Dignity to him
and his Heirs, as of Fee and of Right; whereupon
the said Barony of Broke descended to Elizabeth
Lady Grevile, Grandchild and at length sole Heir
to the said Sir Robert Willughby Knight, the Second
Lord Broke, and came afterwards to her Grandson
and Heir Sir Foulk Grevile Knight, who, though
he was created Lord Brook of Beauchamp's Court by
King James the First, to him and to the Heirs Male
of his Body, yet was he truly and rightfully entitled to the said forementioned Barony of Broke in
Fee to him and his Heirs; and, dying without Issue,
the said Barony of Broke in Fee descended to Margaret Lady Verney, his Sister and sole Heir, married
to Sir Richard Verney Knight, Grandfather of Your
Petitioner; whose Descendants had long since claimed
the same, had not the long Intervals of Parliament
Temp. Car. 1mi, and the Minority of the Three last
Heirs of the Verneys, prevented them: But Your
Petitioner, being now rightful Heir to the said Marg't
Lady Verney his Grandmother, and consequently to
the forementioned Title and Dignity of Lord Broke
in Fee;
"Does humbly pray Your Majesty, That the said
Title and Dignity of Lord Broke, so descended to Your Petitioner as aforesaid, may be
revived in him; and that he may thereupon
have Your Majesty's gracious Writ of Summons, to sit in Parliament accordingly.
"And Your Petitioner shall daily pray for
Your Majesty, &c.
"Richard Verney."
King's Reference:
"William R.
"We are graciously pleased to refer this Petition
to the House of Peers, to take the Petitioner's Claim
and Title into their Consideration, and to do and determine thereupon what shall be found just and right.
"Given at Our Court at Kensinton, the 28th Day
of November, 1694, in the Sixth Year of
Our Reign.
"By His Majesty's Command.
"Shrewsbury."
