FOREWORD

The publication of an inventory of the earthworks in Northamptonshire was considered by the Commissioners to be very desirable in view of the wealth of archaeological sites in the county and the lack of a co-ordinated catalogue of them. The effects of deep-ploughing, ironstone mining, gravel quarrying and urban development in the area present a threat to so many of the sites as to render the preparation of an inventory a matter of increasing urgency. Of the four hundred or so monuments which have been listed in the north-east of the county, many have not hitherto been recognized.

The archaeological sites recorded in this inventory have been examined by our investigator but much original material was gathered from published records, and from manuscript notes and verbal information supplied by local archaeologists and historians; the Commission is conscious of the debt which it owes for the help received from all these sources. It is hoped that this inventory will serve as a useful guide for those concerned with planning decisions and conservation as well as with archaeological studies.
