COALEY

(16 miles w. of Cirencester)

The Roman road from Gloucester to Sea Mills (Abonae) passes through the N.W. part of the parish. Concentra— tions of Romano—British pottery have been recorded on Elmcote Farm, N. of the R. Cam, at so 757032, 759035 and 760029. (fn. 1) A bearded head in Oolite, now in Gloucester City Museum, was found in the garden of Woodleigh House (SO 786004).

Monuments in Coates, Sapperton and Kemble.

(1) Romano—British Building (SO 782021), ½ mile N.E. of the village, lies on level ground less than 200 ft. above O.D., beside a stream.

Coarse pottery, building stone and sandstone roof tiles were recorded from a small area of dark soil. A ditch was exposed by an industrial trench.

(2) Rectangular Enclosure (SO 78890101), undated, on Coaley Peak, shows as a crop—mark on a terrace of the Cotswold escarpment, about 400 ft. above O.D. The sides are about 150 ft. by 120 ft. and there is a gap through the ditch on the E. side.
