Austin Friars Lane (Fig. 201)
This lane runs along the line of the ditch outside the town walls on the W. side of the town.
(84) House, No. 3, two storeys, coursed rubble walls, consists of the gabled cross wing of a 17th-century or earlier building of class 3, the main range having been demolished recently. An extension at the rear of the wing has an early 19th-century appearance but probably retains the plan at least of an earlier structure. Between the former main range and the cross wing is a massive stone chimney stack, partly cased in brick. Inside, an axial chamfered beam extends into the rear extension. Fittings include a mid 17th-century scratchpanelled cupboard door.
