No. 44. - Copy of a Letter from J. Backhouse Esq. to the
Secretary of the Board of Controul, dated at the Foreign
Office, February 18th, 1829; with One Enclosure.
Sir,
With reference to the Request made by Lord Ellenborough, to
be furnished with a Statement of the Quantity of Tea imported
into Holland by the Americans, in each Year since 1813, I am
directed by The Earl of Aberdeen to send to you, for his Lordship's
Information, the Duplicate of the Report upon this Subject, which
has been received from His Majesty's Consul at Rotterdam.
The Report from Washington will be forwarded as soon as it is
received.

Consul at Rotterdam, to John Bidwell Esq. dated 7th October
1828.
Sir,
In obedience to the Desire of The Earl of Aberdeen, communicated by your Letter of the 2d Instant, I have now the Honour to
acquaint you, for the Information of his Lordship, that the
Importation of Tea into this Kingdom, since the Year 1818, has
been as follows:-

The whole Import in these Ten Years having been 419,318
Quarter Chests, and the Consumption is estimated at about 40,000
Quarter Chests per Annum.
In 1827 the Netherlands Trading Company began to import,
and are now the only Dutch Importers, having Four Vessels
employed in that Trade.
No Information of the foregoing Nature can be obtained in this
Country from Official Sources, and as yet my Endeavours to procure satisfactory Particulars of the Imports from 1813 to 1817
have proved ineffectual; but I shall continue my Enquiries, and if
successful, shall have the Honour of again addressing you upon this
Subject.

P.S.-Up to this Date there have been imported in the current
Year 28,404 Quarter Chests by Netherlands Vessels, and 18,108
by Citizens of the United States.
