Watchmen c. 1694-1832

Provision was made for a Watchman with a salary of £20 in the establishment of 1694. (fn. 1) Salaries of £27 for two further Watchmen were made available in 1705. (fn. 2) The salaries of all three Watchmen were fixed at £18 in 1713, at £20 in 1728 and at £25 in 1800. (fn. 3) In 1800 it was arranged that one of the Watchmen should act as Extra Porter with an additional allowance of £40. This was raised to £50 in 1807. (fn. 4) The office of one of the Watchmen was discontinued in 1821. In 1832 the remaining two Watchmen appear to have been absorbed into the class of Hall Messengers. (fn. 5)
