This office was created in 1795 and was invariably held by a naval officer. The salary
was originally £500. (fn. 1) In 1838 the remuneration was increased to £800 which included
an allowance of £300 for a house. (fn. 2) In 1865 the salary was fixed at £1000 in addition to
half pay. (fn. 3) The office was filled on a temporary basis between 1823 and 1829.
