Judge Advocate of the Fleet 1663-1870

This office, to which appointments were made by Admiralty warrant, was established on a permanent basis in 1663. (fn. 1) The salary, which was originally 8s a day (£146 a year), was increased to 10s a day (£182 10s a year) in 1666. (fn. 2) From 1824 the office was held concurrently with that of Counsel to the Admiralty.
