Junior (Assistant) Clerks 1782-1805

In 1782 provision was made for one junior Clerk on the establishment to be associated with each of the six Senior Clerks in the conduct of the business of the new divisions. (fn. 1) These Clerks were designated 'Junior Clerks' on this occasion. Later they were sometimes called 'Deputies' or 'Assistant Clerks'. For the purpose of these lists they have been described as 'Junior (Assistant) Clerks' in order to distinguish them from the undifferentiated group of junior Clerks on the establishment. In 1805 the Clerks in question were absorbed into the new grade of Assistant Clerks.

The Junior (Assistant) Clerks all received a basic salary of £100 as Clerks on the establishment. In addition they enjoyed allowances which varied in amount according to the divisions in which they were serving. In 1782 these allowances were fixed at £120 for the Clerk serving in the first division, £100 for those serving in the second and third divisions and £80, £60 and £50 for those serving in the fourth, fifth and sixth divisions. (fn. 2) In 1798 they were fixed at £200, £200, £150, £100, £100 and £100 respectively. (fn. 3)
