Superintendent of Consular Department 1826-51

In 1826 an annual allowance of £500 was made available to J. Bidwell, the First Senior Clerk, as Superintendent of the newly formed Consular Department. (fn. 1) In 1841 it was provided that the allowance should be discontinued on Bidwell's retirement, which took place in 1851. (fn. 2) Thereafter the duty was performed without any additional allowance by one of the Senior Clerks.
