CHARITIES FOR THE POOR.
Margery Morley by will dated 1728 gave £20 for bread on St. Stephen's day (26 Dec.) and Mary Jeane by will dated 1785 gave £25 for an annual distribution of bread. In 1766 William Brown gave a £2 rent charge to the poor of North Newton for bread on St. Stephen's day. Richard King, by will dated 1828, provided for an annual distribution of bread on 30 November. (fn. 1) All these charities appear to have been lost. (fn. 2)
Mary Moggridge by will dated 1725 gave £20 for bread on St. Stephen's day. (fn. 3) Mary Escott by will dated 1809 gave £100 to the poor; under a scheme of 1871 the income was used in 1879 to provide cheap coal for the poor. (fn. 4) Sarah Ivyleafe by will dated 1816 provided for an annual distribution of coal on St. Stephen's day. (fn. 5) The income from those three charities was in the 1980s being allowed to accumulate.
