BAILIFFS AND MAYORS OF COLCHESTER

The names of the bailiffs for each year were recorded in the borough court rolls (E.R.O., D/B 5 Cr1 onwards) which survive, with some gaps, from 1310 to 1740. The names for the years 1327-1563 were also entered in the Oath Book (E.R.O., D/B 5 R1), which calendars the court rolls, and those for the years 1576 to 1835 were recorded in the assembly books (E.R.O., D/B 5 Gb1-10). Later elections were recorded in the council minutes (E.R.O., Boro. Mun., uncat.) and reported in local newspapers. An incomplete list of bailiffs from the mid 12th century to 1327 can be compiled from various sources. The bailiffs and later mayors took office at Michaelmas until 1835 when the date was changed to November; in 1949 the date was changed to May.

Lists have been published by H. Harrod, Report on the Records of the Borough of Colchester (from 1255 to 1865), and by George Rickword, Bailiffs and Mayors of Colchester (from before 1086 to 1902). Harrod's list is substantially correct; Rickword's contains a number of errors. The following list is based on Harrod's list, corrected from the Oath Book, for the period 1327-1865, and on council minutes, newspapers, and a list at the town hall for the period 1865-1974; sources are given for any other additions or corrections to Harrod's list, and for all bailiffs for the period before 1327. From 1836 the political parties of the mayors, as known from newspaper reports and from information from the mayor's secretary, are given.
