House of Commons Journal Volume 7: 7 July 1653

Thursday, the 7th of July, 1653.

Serjeant at Arms, &c.

RESOLVED, That there be a Committee to examine the Claim of Serjeant Birkhead to the Place of Serjeant at Arms attending this House; and the Claim of any other Person to any Office or Employment in the Service of this House; as also the Qualification and Fitness of such Person; and report how they find the same, with their Opinion therein, to the House; Viz. Colonel Bennett, Col. Rous, Mr. Broughton, Mr. Squib, Mr. Moyer, Alderman Tichborne, Mr. Freere, Mr. Taylor, Mr. Stone, Mr. Highland, Sir Wm. Roberts, Sir Charles Wolseley.

The Question being put, That Three be the Quorum of this Committee;

It passed in the Negative.

Resolved, That Five be the Quorum of this Committee; And that they meet at Two of the Clock this Afternoon, in the Queen's Court.

Godliness of Servants of the House.

Resolved, That no Person shall be employed or admitted into the Service of this House, but such as this House shall be first satisfied of his real Godliness.

Lord General.

Resolved, That the Lord General do sit as a Member of the Council of State.

Resolved, That Sir Wm. Roberts, Mr. Strickland, Colonel Jones, and Sir Gilbert Pickering, do attend his Lordship, and acquaint him with this Order.

Council of State.

Ordered, That the former Instructions to the Council of State be brought into the House To-morrow Morning, to be then taken into Consideration.

Title of the House.

The House this Day resumed the Debate, what Addition shall be made to the Word "Parliament," in the Title of this House.

Resolved, That these Words, "of the Commonwealth of England," be added to the Word "Parliament," in the Title of this House.

The Speaker.

Resolved, That such Person, as shall be called to the Chair of the House, shall be Speaker; and have the Title of Speaker.

God's Blessing on Parliament.

Resolved, That there be a Declaration sent forth, to invite all the People of God, within this Commonwealth, to seek the Lord, for a Blessing upon the Counsels and Proceedings of this Parliament: And that Mr. Swinton, Col. Sidenham, Col. Clark, Sir Gilbert Pickering, Mr. Sadler, Mr. Barbone, Mr. Broughton, Sir Charles Wolseley, Col. West, or any Three of them, are to prepare a Declaration for the purpose aforesaid; and report it to the House: And are to meet in the Speaker's Chamber this Afternoon, at Three of the Clock.

Servants of the House.

Resolved, That it be likewise referred to the Committee, to whom the Business of the Serjeant at Arms and other Officers is referred, to consider of what Servants are further necessary to attend the Service of this House; and of the Fitness of the Persons; and of fit Salaries for such Servants; and report the same, with their Opinion, to the House.

The Journal.

Ordered, That Mr. Carew, Mr. Strickland, Mr. Sadler, Mr. Broughton, Sir Wm. Roberts, Alderman Tichborne, or any Two of them, be appointed to see an Entry made by the Clerk in the Journal, touching the Meeting and Proceedings of this House on Monday last.
