A LETTER from Mr. Strickland, from the Hagh, of 21 Julii, 1 Augusti, was read.

Army Declaration.

The House resumed the Debate and Consideration of the Declaration sent from the Lords in the Forenoon.

Resolved, &c. That Candles be brought in.

The Question was propounded, That this House doth concur with the Lords, in agreeing to this Declaration:

And the Question being put, Whether this Question shall be now put;

The House was divided.

The Noes went forth.

So that the Question passed with the Negative.

Margarett's Poor.

ORDERED, That the Sum of One hundred Pounds be bestowed for the Relief of the poor visited People of Margarett's, Westminster; and paid, by the Committee of the Revenue, unto the Collectors of the visited Poor of the said Parish; and disposed and issued forth for the Relief of the said poor visited People, by Order of Sir Robert Pye, Mr. Wheeler, and Mr. Bell.

Sermons.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth concur with the Lords, That the Two Sermons to be preached To-morrow, the Day of Thanksgiving, before the Lords and Commons at the Abbey Church, Westminster, be successively together, without Intermission: And that they do begin at Nine of Clock.

Answer to Lords.

Answer returned to the Message from the Lords Yesterday; That this House had considered their Lordships Message; and as to that Part, That the Sermons be Tomorrow, successively together, they do agree: To the rest, they will send Answer by Messengers of their own.

Complaint against Britton.

The humble Petition of Wm. Braine Captain Lieutenant to Colonel Hardwich, Colonel of the Regiment of Trained Bands in Southwark, in the Behalf of himself, and the Inhabitants thereof, was this Day read; complaining of Assaults made upon himself, by Words and Blows, and upon others the Inhabitants of the Borough of Southwark, for their Endeavours to prevent the Effusion of Blood, and the Engagement in a new War.

The said Captain Lieutenant Wm. Braine, being called in to the House, did affirm, That Thomas Britton, a Cooper in Love Lane, and Corporal to Colonel Hooker, did assault him by Blows on Friday last; and did reproach and revile the Inhabitants of the Borough of Southwark, for their late Action in joining with the Army.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of the late Action of the Officers, Soldiers, and Inhabitants, of the Borough of Southwark, and all others that assisted them in joining with the Army, for Preservation of the Peace of the Parliament, City, and Kingdom: And that Thanks be given them for the said Action: And that Colonel Thompson and Mr. Snelling, that serve in Parliament for the said Borough, do return them the Thanks of the House.

The Lords Concurrence to be desired herein.

Colonel Thompson is appointed to carry it to the Lords.

Ordered, That the Petition of Wm. Braine, Captain Lieutenant to Colonel Hardwich, be referred to the Examination and Consideration of the Committee of Complaints.

Resolved, &c. That Thomas Britton, a Cooper in Love Lane, Corporal to Colonel Hooker, be forthwith sent for as a Delinquent, by the Serjeant at Arms attending on this House, for assaulting Wm. Brayne, Captain Lieutenant to Colonel Hardwich, with reproachful Words, and with Blows, for his assisting with the Borough of Southwark, to join with the Army, for Preservation of the Peace of the Parliament, City, and Kingdom: And that it be referred to the Examination of the Committee of Complaints: Who are to meet upon it this Afternoon at Two of Clock.

Herts Militia.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of the late Action of the Committee of the Militia of the County of Herts, in raising the Forces of the said County, to join with the Army, for Preservation of the Peace of the Parliament, City, and Kingdom; and doth give them Thanks for it: And

Mr. Leman and Sir Thomas Dacres are appointed to give them Thanks.

Blunt's Proceedings.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve of the late Action and Proceedings of Colonel Blunt, and all others that assisted him, in joining with the Army, for Preservation of the Peace of the Parliament, City, and Kingdom; and doth give him and them Thanks for it.

Publick Stores.

Resolved, &c. That the Committee of the Army do forthwith examine, What Arms, Ammunition, and other Materials of War, have been taken out of the Tower; and by what Warrant and Authority: And that they do forthwith seize them; and take them into their Custody: And that they do restore to the Magazine of the Army, what belongs unto it, and to the publick Stores, what belongs to them; and to the Stores of the Navy, what belongs thereunto: And have Power to send for Witnesses, Papers, Records.

Clerk of the Stores.

BE it Ordered and Ordained, by the and Commons, That Wm. Billers, Clerk of the Deliveries of all Stores brought into the Tower, do continue and execute the said Place of Clerk of the Stores, in the same and like manner, to all Intents and Purposes, as he was on Monday the 26th of July last.

It is further Ordained, by the Authority aforesaid, That Oliver St. Johns Esquire, his Majesty's Solicitor General, do prepare a Patent, containing the Grant of the said Place of Clerk of the Deliveries unto the said Wm. Billers, during Life: And that the Commissioners of the Great Seal do pass the said Grant, so prepared, under the Great Seal of England, unless they shall see good Cause to the contrary: And, for their so doing, this shall be a sufficient Warrant to the Solicitor General, and the Commissioners of the Great Seal, respectively.

Message to Lords.

Colonel Thompson carried to the Lords, for their Concurrence, the Order for approving the late Action of the Borough of Southwark, in joining with the Army: The like Order for the like Approbation of the late Action of the Committee of the Militia of the County of Herts: The like Order for the like Approbation of the late Action of Colonel Blunt, and those that assisted him, in joining with the Army: The Order for referring it to the Committee of the Army to examine, What Arms, or Materials of War, have been taken out of the Tower; and by what Authority; and to seize them.

Acts passed since Violence to Parliament.

An Ordinance concerning the repealing all Votes, Orders, and Ordinances, passed since the Force on Monday 26 Julii 1647, until 6 Augusti, was this Day read the First time; and, upon the Question, ordered to be now read the Second time:

Colonel Thompson brings Answer, That the Lords do agree to all the Orders carried by him; concerning the Borough of Southwark; concerning the Committee of the Militia of the County of Herts; concerning Colonel Blunt; concerning the Power given to the Committee of the Army, for inquiring after what Ammunition, or Materials of War, have been taken out of the Tower.

Message from Lords.

A Message from the Lords, by Dr. Aylett and Mr. Sadler;

The Lords have commanded us to bring you this Paper, concerning some Votes sent on Friday last; and a Declaration of his Excellency Sir Thomas Fairfax.

Their Message is set down in Writing in this Paper; and was in hæc verba; viz.

The Lords sent down certain Votes on Friday last; a Declaration of his Excellency Sir Thomas Fairfax, with a Vote thereupon; Unto all which the Lords did then desire the Concurrence of the House of Commons: They do now again put the House of Commons in mind thereof; and desire their Concurrence to those Votes; conceiving them so necessary as that, without which, the further Proceeding in such Things as may tend to the Settlement of the Peace of the Kingdom will be greatly obstructed.

The Lords have resolved to meet To-morrow at Eight of Clock; and so to go to the Abbey Church to the Sermons.

Answer.

Answer returned by the same Messengers; That this House has considered their Lordships Message; and do take notice of the Lords resolving to meet To-morrow at Eight of Clock: To the rest, they will send Answer by Messengers of their own.

Army Vindication.

A Declaration for the Vindication of the Army and Sir Thomas Fairfax, sent from the Lords 9 Augusti, was read; and, upon the Question, referred to the former Committee.

Suppressing Stage Plays, &c.

Ordered, That the Sheriffs of London and Middlesex, the Justices of Peace of London, Middlesex, and Surrey, be hereby required and enjoined to put the Ordinance for Suppressing of all Stage Plays, Dancings of the Ropes, Bearbaitings, and Bullbaitings, in due and effectual Execution: And they are hereby required to be very diligent and strict in improving their Authority, for the suppressing and preventing any Stage Plays, Dancings of the Ropes, Bearbaitings, or Bullbaitings.

Settling the Publick Peace.

Ordered, That the Proposals for settling the publick Peace, presented to the House by the Commissioners appointed to reside with the Army, be taken into Consideration on Friday Morning next.

Preachers appointed.

Ordered, That Mr. Perne and Mr. Knight be desired to preach before the Commons the next Fast Day; Mr. Case and Mr. Woodcock, formerly appointed, desiring to be excused.

Major Scott is appointed to desire Mr. Knight; and Mr. Rose, Mr. Perne.

Removing Reformadoes;

An Ordinance for putting Reformado Officers and Soldiers Twenty Miles out of the Lines of Communication, sent from the Lords 9 Augusti, was this Day read the First and Second time.

Resolved, &c. That the 10th of August, in this Ordinance, be made the 16th.

Resolved, &c. That this Ordinance be committed unto the foresaid Committee: And they are to meet upon it this Afternoon; and bring it on Friday Morning, the first Business.
