Governor of I. of Wight.

A Letter from Colonel Hamond, Governor of the Isle of Wight, from Carisbrook Castle, of Novembris 26 1648; with an inclosed Letter from the General, to the Governor of the Isle of Wight, of 21 Novembris, 1648, requiring his speedy Repair to him; were this Day read.

Resolved, &c. That a Letter be sent to Colonel Hamond, to require him to stay in the Isle of Wight, and attend his Charge there, till the House take further Order.

Resolved, &c. That a Letter be written to the General, to acquaint him, That the House has required the Governor of the Isle of Wight to stay in the Isle of Wight, and attend his Charge there, till the Houses take further Order.

Mr. Knightley, Colonel Brooke, and Colonel White, are appointed to withdraw, and prepare those Letters, in the Name of both Houses.

Ordered, That Sir John Temple, and Mr. Wheeler be added to Mr. Knightley, and the rest appointed to draw the Letters to the General, and Governor of the Isle of Wight.

Order discharged.

Ordered, That the Order of * * * *, appointing Ten thousand Pounds to be paid out of the Receipts at Goldsmiths Hall, for the Service of the Navy, in lieu of Monies taken up for the Service of the Army, belonging to the Navy, be, and is hereby, discharged.

Governor of Isle of Wight.

Mr. Wheeler reports a Letter, to be sent to Colonel Robert Hamond, Governor of the Isle of Wight, for Answer to his, of 26 Novembris 1648; informing the House, That he had received a Letter from the Lord General, requiring him to repair speedily unto him, and a Letter to the Lord General, upon the same Business: The which were read; and, after some Amendments made therein, they were, upon the Question, assented unto; and ordered to be sent to the Lords for their Concurrence.

Mr. Wheeler is appointed to carry them to the Lords for their Concurrence.

Defence of Isle of Wight.

Resolved, &c. That the Committee at Derby House do write to the Lord Admiral, to send some Ships to the Isle of Wight, for Defence and Safety of that Place: With Order to the said Ships, to receive and observe the Orders of Colonel Robert Hamond, Governor of the Isle of Wight.

Repaying Loans.

Resolved, &c. That it be referred to the Committee for Removal of Obstructions in the Sale of Bishops Lands, and the Committee of the Navy, joined as to this Business, to consider of the Ordinances that appoint the Bringing in of the Thirty thousand Pounds for such poor People as voluntarily lent Monies to the Parliament; and to prepare Instructions for the orderly issuing and paying out those Monies, according to those Ordinances.

Leave of Absence.

Ordered, That Mr. John Arundell, a Member of this House, have Leave to go into the Country.

Message from Lords.

A Message from the Lords, by Dr. Heath and Mr. Eltonhead;

The Lords have agreed to the Names of the Sheriffs, with some Alterations; to which they desire the Concurrence of this House.

They have received a Petition from the Town of Aldborough, to make it a Market Town; and do agree unto it; and desire the Concurrence of this House.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree with the Lords, That Sir Thomas Sanders be Sheriff of the County of Bucks, in the place of John Clerk Esquire, nominated by this House.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree with the Lords, That John Browning Esquire be Sheriff of the County of Gloucester, in the place of Sir Richard Braine Knight.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth nominate and appoint * Selby Esquire to be Sheriff of the County of Kent: And that the Commissioners of the Great Seal of England do issue a Commission to him to be Sheriff of the said County, accordingly.

Resolved, &c. That it be referred to the Committee for the County of Oxon, to examine the Delinquency of Mr. Calvert Wright; and to proceed with him, accordingly; the House having received Information, That he rode in Prince Rupert's Troop.

Alborough Town.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Commissioners of the Great Seal, to issue forth a Writ Ad quod damnum, according to the usual Course and Custom of the Law, upon the Desire of the Inhabitants of Two-and-twenty Towns in the County of Norfolk, That the Town of Alborough, next the Sea, in the said County, may be made a Market Town.

Bullock and Carelesse.

Ordered, That the Committee of Indemnity have Power to rehear the Cause before that Committee, between Bullock and Carelesse.

Answer returned by the same Messengers; That this House has considered their Lordships Message; and, as . . the Sheriffs, sent by the Lords, for the Counties of Kent, Lincolne, Oxon, Wigorn' and Warwick, they will send Answer by Messengers of their own: To the rest they do agree: To the Ordinance for making Alborough a Market Town, they will send Answer by Messengers of their own.

Message from Lords.

The Lords have been informed, by the Commissioners of the Great Seal, That the Serjeants of the last Call have delivered a Ring to them, to be presented to the King: the Commissioners desire to know, How they may send it to him: The Lords desire it may . . left to the Commissioners, to send it away in such Manner as they shall think sit; and desire the Concurrence of this House: -The humble Petition of Charles Cockayne; to which the Lords do agree; and desire the Concurrence of this House:-An Ordinance for some of the reduced Officers, for Advance Monies upon their Discoveries to be made: Which they have passed; and desire the Concurrence of this House.

The Lords desire, That Mr. John Swynfen may be added to the Committee for the College of Westminster, in the place of the Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas: And that this House would expedite the Ordinance concerning the College of Westminster, formerly sent to this House; in regard they cannot pay the Allowances to the Minister without it.

Resolved, &c. That, as to that Part of the Message, concerning the Ring delivered by the Serjeants of the late Call to be presented to the King, they will send Answer by Messengers of their own.

Disbanding Forces.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree with the Lords, that all the Forces, both Horse and Foot, lately raised in the County of Leicester, be forthwith disbanded: And it is hereby referred to the Committee of the said County, to take care for the Disbanding of them, accordingly.

Cockayne's Petition.

Ordered, That the humble Petition of Charles Cockayne Esquire be referred to the Consideration of the Committee for Goldsmiths Hall; to state and report the Matter of Fact to the House; with their Opinions thereupon.

Officers Arrears.

The Ordinance, now sent from the Lords, upon the Petition of divers reduced Officers, to have Satisfaction for their Arrears out of Discoveries, was this Day read the First and Second time.

Westminster College.

Ordered, That, the Ordinance concerning the College of Westminster, be read on Friday Morning next, peremptorily, the first Business.

Plymouth Garison, &c.

The humble Remonstrance and Demands of Colonel Ralph Welden, Governor of Plymouth, concerning the Fort and Island at Plymouth, to the Right honourable the Committee of Safety, was this Day read.

Resolved, &c. That Twenty Horse be paid by the Committee of the County of Devon: And that the said Twenty Horse be ordered; and be at the Command of Colonel Welden.

Ordered, That Colonel Welden do again return to this Charge at Plymouth.

Army Arrears, &c.

Ordered, That Sir John Bampfield be desired to go into the County of Devon, to hasten in the Arrears due to the Army, by that County.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of the Army, to make Payment of the Nineteen Weeks Arrears of the Soldiers of the several Garisons of the Fort and Island of St. Nicholas, near Plymouth, due since the Establishment in January last.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of the Army, and the Gentlemen of the West Country to meet this Afternoon, touching the Arrears due by that * * upon the Assessments: And the Committee of the Army are to make it appear To-morrow Morning, that there is an Arrear for the County of Devon.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of the West, to see, How the Sum of Four thousand Pounds may be paid for Relief of the poor Soldiers in the said Garisons of the Fort and Island of St. Nicholas; and to report the same to the House: And when they make Report thereof, the Committee of the Army is to make Report, What Arrears are due from the County of Devon.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee at Darby House, to give Order for Ammunition, Powder, Match, and Bullet, to supply the Garisons of the Fort and Isle of St. Nicholas.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of the Army, to consider, How Payment may be made to the Garison of Dartmouth, and how Free Quarter may be taken off from the said Town.
