Letter read.
A LETTER from Robert Blake and Richard Deane,
the Thirteenth of June 1649, from aboard the
Triumph, in Milford Haven, was this Day read.
Thompson's, &c. Petition.
The humble Petition of James Thompson, Mary Steedman Widow, and other Inhabitants of Glenfeild in the
County of Leicester, was this Day read.
Ordered, That the said Petition be referred to the Committee of Leicester; to hear and determine the Business:
And, if they cannot end the same, then the said Committee are to certify the State of the Business to this House:
And that a Copy of this Order, and the said Petition, be
delivered to Sir Edward Moseley, by the Petitioners, that
he may attend the Committee, when they shall appoint,
accordingly.
Durham Assize.
Sir Henry Vane senior reports an Act for enabling the
Judges that go the Northern Circuit to hold an Assize at
Durham, on Thursday the Second of August 1649;
Which was this Day read the First and Second time;
and, upon the Question, committed to Mr. Martyn, Sir
Hen. Vane senior, Mr. Myles Corbett, Mr. Salway, Colonel Wasthall; or any Three of them: Who are to withdraw, and to bring it into the House forthwith.
Judges Commissions.
Whereas some Alterations, in matter of Form, have
been made, by this present Parliament, in the Commissions of Justices of Assize, of Oyer and Terminer, and
Gaol Delivery, for the Counties of Mountgomery and
Denbigh in Wales: It is now Ordered, That the same Alterations for matter of Form, mutatis mutandis, be made
by the Clerk of the Crown, in the Commissions to the
Justices of Assize, and of Oyer and Terminer and Gaol
Delivery for the Counties of Chester and Flynt: And the
Lords Commissioners of the Great Seal of England, for
the Time being, are to cause the same to be made and
issued out accordingly.
Serjeant Bradshaw.
The House this Day took up the Consideration of the
great Merits of John Bradshaw Serjeant at Law, Lord
President of the Council of State.
Resolved, &c. That Two thousand Pounds per Annum,
in Lands, be settled upon John Bradshawe Serjeant at
Law, Lord President of the Council of State, and his
Heirs.
Ordered, That it be referred to a Committee, to
consider speedily of Lands, of the full Value of Two
thousand Pounds per Annum, de claro, to be settled
accordingly, so as the Rents thereof may be received at
Michaelmas next by the said Lord President; and to bring
in an Act accordingly: Viz. unto Sir Wm. Brereton, Mr.
Lisle, Mr. Whitelock, Mr. Gurdon, Mr. Corbett, Mr.
Halowes, Lieutenant General Cromwell, Mr. Scott, Colonel Purefoy, Lord Howard, Mr. Lechmere, Sir
Wm. Strickland, Sir Peter Wentworth, Colonel Bossevile,
Colonel Wauton, Mr. Darley, Mr. Dove, Mr. Garland,
Colonel Ven, Colonel Jones, Mr. Holland, Captain Skinner, Mr. Allein; or any Five of them: And are to meet
at Two of the Clock this Afternoon, in the Exchequer
Chamber; and so de die in diem: And the particular
Care hereof is commended to Mr. Lechmere and Mr.
Garland.
Resolved, &c. That One thousand Pounds be forthwith
paid to John Bradshaw Serjeant at Law, Lord President
of the Council of State, toward his Charges expended in
the Service of the State.
Ordered, That it be specially referred to the Council
of State, to take care, and give Order, for the speedy
Payment thereof accordingly.
General Skippon.
Mr. Miles Corbett reports an Act for Two thousand
Pounds to be paid to Major General Philip Skippon; viz.
by the Committee of Accompts of Suffolk, Five hundred
Pounds; and by the Committee of Accompts of Norfolk,
Five hundred Pounds; and One thousand Pounds, with
Interest, due upon a Mortgage of the Manor of Chambury Hall.
Which was read the First and Second time; and, upon
the Question, committed to the same Committee who are
to bring in the Act for Two thousand Pounds per Annum
to the Lord President of the Council of State: Who
are to take care to find out Lands of the clear yearly
Value of One thousand Pounds, to be settled upon Major
General Skippon, and his Heirs: And that this Two
thousand Pounds be paid to him in Part of his Arrears:
And that the Act be brought in, to that Purpose, on
Tuesday next: And Mr. John Corbett, Colonel Ven, Mr.
Allen, and Colonel Wauton, are added to that Committee:
And the particular Care hereof is referred to Mr. Miles
Corbett and Mr. Lechmere.
Deans and Chapters Lands.
Mr. Lechmere reports an Act for removing of Obstructions in the Sale of the Lands of Deans and Chapters;
Which was read the First and Second time; and, upon
the Question, committed to the Committee for removing
Obstructions in Sale of Deans and Chapters Lands.
Westminster College.
Colonel Feilder reports from the Committee of Westminster College, the yearly Charges of the School and
Alms-house of Westminster: Which was read; and likewise a Particular of divers Rents out of the Houses,
Manors, and Lands, belonging to the Deanry of Westminster, to be settled upon the said School and Alms-house.
Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee for
the College of Westminster, and to the Committee for
removing Obstructions in the Sale of Deans and Chapters
Lands, to take the same into Consideration; and to bring
in an Act, as they shall think fit.
Ordered, That it be referred to the same Committee,
to consider of Provision for repairing and maintaining the
said Church, and for such necessary Officers as are fit to
be continued there; and present their Opinions to the
House.
Deans and Chapters Lands.
An Act touching the Salaries of the Treasurers and
Contractors for Sale of Deans and Chapters Lands, was
read the First and Second time.
And the Question being put, That it be committed;
It passed with the Negative.
The Question being put, That the said Act be ingrossed;
It passed with the Negative.
Resolved, &c. That this pass as an Act.
Duresme Assize.
Mr. Marten reports Amendments to the Act for enabling the Judges that go the Northern Circuit to hold
an Assize at Duresme: Which were twice read; and,
upon the Question, agreed unto.
And the said Act, so amended, being put to the Question, was, upon the Question, passed; and ordered to
be printed and published.
Van Couter, &c.
Major General Skippon reports from the Council of
State, the State of the Petition of Abraham Van Couter,
and Adrian Henrix, Merchants of the Intercourse.
Which was this Day read.
He also reports the State of the said Business: And the
Certificate of Dr. Wm. Sames, of the Two-and-twentieth
of June 1646: And also a Certificate from Plymouth.
Which were this Day read.
Ordered, That it be re-committed to the Court of Admiralty, to examine the Business touching Abraham Van
Couter, and Adrian Henrix, Merchants: And that Power
be given to the Court of Admiralty, to examine Mr.
Marten, a Member of this House, or any other Persons
that they shall think fit; and report their Opinions, upon
the whole Matter, to this House: And the said Petition,
and several Certificates, are also re-committed to the
Court of Admiralty.
Admiralty.
Ordered, That the Report touching the Jurisdiction of
the Admiralty be made on Saturday next.
Absent Members.
Ordered, That the Committee touching absent Members do sit, in the Queen's Court, at Eight of Clock
every Morning, until the Thirtieth of this instant June,
upon that Business: And that Colonel Hutchinson be
added to that Committee, to all Intents and Purposes.
Business to be done.
Ordered, That the Council of State do, on Thursday
Morning next, return their Opinion to this House,
according to the former Order, What Acts and Things
are necessary to be passed, and taken into Consideration,
before the Adjournment of this House.
Reduced Officers, &c.
Ordered, That the reduced Officers, and Widows whose
Husbands lost their Lives in the Service, whose Names
are subscribed to the Petition presented to this House
16 Junii instant, be relieved; and their Arrears satisfied,
as well out of the Discoveries by them to be made, as
also out of the Eleven thousand Six hundred and Sixteen
. . . . . . discovered, reported by Mr. Dove: And that
the Order, made the Sixteenth of this instant June, be
amended so accordingly.
Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee at
Haberdashers . . . ., to give Satisfaction to the Widow
Cowell, who lost her Husband in the Parliament Service,
for the Arrears due to her said late Husband, out of the
Eleven thousand Six hundred Sixteen Pounds and Ten
Shillings, mentioned in the List reported by Mr. Dove:
And the Acquittance or Acquittances of the said Widow
Cowell, or her Assigns, shall be a sufficient Discharge to
the said Committee, and their Treasurers, for Payment
thereof, or any Part thereof, unto the said Widow Cowell,
or her Assigns, accordingly.
