Letter read.

A LETTER from the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, of the Thirteenth of August 1649, was this Day read.

Ecclesiastical Affairs.

Ordered, That the Committee to whom the Act touching tender Consciences is committed, be required to meet this Afternoon; and to consider of some able Persons in the several Counties, who may be authorized to examine, approve, and allow of Persons, who, being qualified with Gifts for the Ministry, and willing to enter into that Work, do scruple the Form of Ordination now settled; and to present their Names; and to bring in an Act to that Purpose.

Ordered, That Alderman Wilson do take care of it.

Bishop of Calcedon, &c.

The House being informed, That there was, at the Door, Mr. Sanson, Secretary to the Commissioners of the Excise, with some Commissions from the Bishop of Calcedon to Priests in England, and some other Popish Papers, taken at Rye;

He was called in: And, being come to the Bar, he produced several Papers and Writings; which, he informed, were sent up to the Commissioners of the Customs by the Officers of Excise; and that they were taken out of a Frenchman's Chest: And, by Command of the House, did deliver them in.

The Commissions, being Twenty-eight in Number, some with Blanks, others filled up, the Form of one of them being read, began thus; "Richardus, Dei & Apostolicæ Seais Gratia, Episcopus Chalcedonensis, Ordinarius Catholicorum, in Anglia & Scotia;" and dated " Parisiis, Anno, 1649, Die vero Mensis Maii 9;" and subscribed, "Richardus Episcopus Chalcedonensis, Angliæ & Scotiæ Ordinarius."

Ordered, That, it be referred to Mr. Attorney General, to consider of these Commissions and Papers; and to proceed according to the Laws, against such of the Persons to whom those Commissions are directed, as shall be apprehended: And that Mr. Attorney do acquaint the House, if there be any Obstruction in the Proceedings against them.

Ordered, That Mr. Bourne be appointed to attend Mr. Attorney, in this Business; and to solicit the same against such of the said Persons as shall be so apprehended.

Ordered, That Mr. Speaker do deliver, to Mr. Attorney, the Note of the Names of the Persons to whom those Commissions are directed; And that Mr. Attorney do use his best Endeavour for their Apprehensions, that they may be proceeded against accordingly.

Dr. Hierotheus.

Mr. James Challener reports from the Committee for Reformation of the Universities of Oxon and Cambridge, their Recommendation of Dr. Hierotheus, a Grecian, of Cephalonia, to the House, for a Collection; and presented unto the House a Book, translated, by the said Dr. Hierotheus, into Vulgar Greek.

Army.

Upon Debate of the several Orders for Payment of Four thousand Six hundred Pounds, for the Disbanding of the Lancashire Forces;

It is Ordered, That it be reported to the House, as the Opinion of this Committee, That the Order of Parliament of the Ninth of April last, directing the Payment of the said Sum unto Mr. Wayneright, out of the latter Moiety of the Lord Molieneux his Fine, may be revoked: And that the Order of the Twenty-fourth of October 1648, for Payment of Three thousand One hundred Fifty-five Pounds Fifteen Shillings Ten-pence, formerly granted to the Lord Willoughby of Parham, in Part of the said Sum of Four thousand Six hundred Pounds, do stand in Force: And that the said Three thousand One hundred and Fifty-five Pounds Fifteen Shillings and Ten-pence be paid, according to that Order, to Mr. Alexander Norres, or his Assigns: And that the Sum of One thousand Four hundred Forty-four Pounds Four Shillings and Two-pence, which makes up the said Sum of Four thousand Six hundred Pounds, may be charged, in Course, upon the Treasury of Goldsmiths Hall, to be accounted, from the said Ninth Day of April 1649, out of that Moiety of the Receipts charged for Payment of the Lord Fairfax his Army.

Westminster School.

Colonel Feilder reports from the Committee for the College of Westminster, an Act for Maintenance of the School of Westminster.

Which was read the First and Second time; and, upon the Question, committed to the Committee for Obstructions, and to the Committee of the College; and that they be joined together as one Committee, for this Purpose: And the Committee, or any Five of them, are to have Power to bring in the Names of Governors; and to consider likewise of the Schedule, presented by the Committee, of the Rents desired to be settled on the College.

And Colonel Feilder is to have special Care hereof.

Redeeming Captives.

Ordered, That the Report touching the Captives in Argier, be made on Friday Morning, the first Business; nothing to intervene.

Sir A. Loftus.

Ordered, That Sir Adam Loftus his Business be taken into Consideration on Friday Morning next.

Earl of Denbighe.

Ordered, That the Earl of Denbighe's Business be reported on Friday next, next after the Business of Sir Adam Loftus, and the Captives.

Prisoners.

Ordered, That the Act touching the Prisoners be reported, the first Business, To-morrow Morning.

Bossevile's Accompts.

Whereas, by former Order of this House, Colonel Bossevile was to have what appeared to be due unto him, upon his Accompts, out of such Delinquents Estates, as he shall discover at Haberdashers Hall: It is now Ordered, That the said Colonel Bossevile shall be satisfied the said Monies due to him, as well out of the public Monies in the Hands of any Collectors and Treasurers, or any other Monies which belong to the Commonwealth, and are concealed in the Hands of any Person or Persons; as also out of such Delinquents Estates as he shall discover.

Earl of Nottingham.

Resolved, &c. That these Words: viz. "and that the Committee of the Navy do give Order for Payment thereof accordingly;" be added to an Order dated the One-and-twentieth of May 1649; whereby the Earl of Nottingham was to have and receive the Arrears of his Pension of Five hundred Pounds per Annum, from the Time he went into Scotland; and the same Pension, as it shall grow due for the future, out of the old Customs, according to his Grant.

Army Arrears.

The humble Petition of the reduced Officers and Gentlemen of Colonel Sanderson's late Regiment of Horse, was this Day read.

The humble Petition of about Two thousand Five hundred Persons, included in a List, commonly called Potter's List, was this Day read.

Colonel Ven reports from the Commissioners for Accompts at Worcester House, a Book, intituled, "The humble Representation of the Committee for the Accompts of the Soldiery, sitting at Worcester House," of the Arrears of Pay resting, if allowed, to the Officers and Soldiers, upon their Accompts, whose Names are particularly expressed; as also Monies due and owing to the Commonwealth, by the Officers and Soldiers, upon their Accompts, whose Names are particularly expressed: The Demands, One hundred Nineteen thousand Five hundred Thirty-four Pounds Six Shillings and Two-pence; the Receipts, Sixty-three thousand Six hundred Fifty-four Pounds Eight Shillings; Free Quarter, Forty-seven thousand One hundred Four Pounds Fourteen Shillings and Eleven-pence; Surcharge, Three Thousand Forty-six Pounds, Six Shillings and Eight-pence; due to the Soldiery, Thirteen thousand Six hundred Seventeen Pounds Seven Shillings and Ten-pence; due to the State, Seven thousand Seven hundred Thirty-four Pounds Fifteen Shillings and One Peny: Which, together with their Certificates and Memorandums, was now read.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth approve and allow of the several Accompts of the Officers and Soldiers, certified by the said Commissioners of Accompts; and doth approve of what the said Commissioners have done therein. And the said Committee are thereby authorized and required to give out Debentures for what doth appear to be due to the said Officers and Soldiers respectively.

Resolved, That the same Committee do proceed with the stating of Accompts, according to the former Rules; and that the Power be continued until the last Day of March now next coming.

Colonel Ven reports an Act for the Salaries and Allowance mentioned in an Ordinance, of the Twentieth of July 1648, to be paid by the Commissioners of Excise to the Auditors of the Accompts of the Soldiery, nominated in that Ordinance, be continued to be paid them, till the House give further Order; and for allowing One hundred Pounds more per Annum unto them, towards the desraying the Charge.

Which was this Day read: And the Time being, by Order, upon the Question, amended and made, until the last of March 1650; the Act, so amended, was, upon the Question, passed.

Ordered, That the said Book intituled, "The humble Representation of the Committee for the Accompts of the Soldiery, sitting at Worcester House," be forthwith printed and published.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee of Accompts, to consider of the several Lists, called Sanderson's Lists, and Potter's List; and examine whether the Persons, whose Accompts are stated in this Book, now presented, be comprised in the said several Lists, or either of them; and report it to the Committee for maimed Soldiers: And that the said Auditors do, from time to time, examine whether any Persons, who come to have their Accompts by them hereafter stated, be any of the Persons comprised in these Lists: And that the said Auditors do forbear to state any Accompts of any of those in these Lists, or either of them.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee at Goldsmiths Hall, to consider of the Business touching the Nine thousand One hundred Pounds, and the Forty-two thousand Pounds; and to state the same to the House: And that they call to them the Treasurers for the maimed Soldiers, and the Committee of Sequestrations at Guildhall; and to advise with them how so much, as is due unto the Persons, in the respective Lists, may be paid; and likewise to examine and consider whether the Nine thousand One hundred Pounds ought not to be Part of the Forty-two thousand Pounds: And that the same Committee do take into Consideration these several Petitions; and report their Opinions to the House.

Ordered, That the Petition of above Two hundred well-affected Farmers, and other Persons, be referred to the Committee for Accompts at Worcester House, to state their Accompts; and, if they shall find any thing due to them, to report it to the House.
