Learning, &c. in Ireland.
AN Act for the Encouragement and Advancement
of Learning, and the true Knowledge and Worship of God, and the Advancement of the Gospel, in
Ireland, and for Erecting of Two Colleges in Ireland, for
that End, was this Day read the First and Second time;
and, upon the Question, committed unto Mr. Weaver,
Lord Commissioner Whitelock, Mr. Challener, Mr. Fry,
Earl of Pembrooke, Mr. Holland, Sir James Harrington,
Mr. Bond, Colonel Birch, Lord Lisle, Mr. Whitacre,
Mr. Robinson, Mr. Stephens, Colonel Harrison, Mr.
Gurdon, Alderman Hoyle, Mr. Aldworth, Colonel Temple,
Colonel Purefoy, Earl of Salisbury, Mr. Clement, Colonel
Bossevile, Sir Henry Vane, Mr. Pury, Mr. Oldesworth,
Colonel Ludlow, Mr. Browne, Colonel Ven, Mr. Scott,
Colonel Fenwick, Mr. Anlaby; or any Five of them:
And they are to meet in the Exchequer Chamber, on
Monday in the Afternoon at Two of the Clock; and so
de die in diem.
And the more particular Care hereof is referred to
Mr. Weaver.
Correspondence with Car. 2.
Mr. Scott reports from the Council of State, That this
Council hath several Informations, that many Persons
that adhere unto the late King's eldest Son, do continue
in this Commonwealth, and hold their Correspondencies
with him, and carry on his Designs, and particularly by
holding Intelligencies with Persons of his Party in and
about London; which may prove of great Danger to the
Commonwealth; and therefore do desire the Parliament,
to take into their Consideration, and to pass some Law
for the Prevention of the Danger which may come thereby, in some such manner as they shall think fit.
Ordered, That it be referred back to the Council of
State, to consider of and present an Act to the House,
for the preventing of these Mischiefs: And that they do
it with all Speed.
Liverpoole Garison.
Colonel Marten reports from the Council of State,
That the Garison of Liverpoole is in need of Repair; and
that Six hundred Pounds will supply it.
Ordered, That it be referred to the Council of State,
to take care to see that Garison repaired.
Assessments.
Colonel Ven reports from the Committee of the Army,
Amendments to an Act for the Assessments: Which were
read the First and Second time.
A Proviso was tendered to the said Bill, That all those
Persons who have left the Commonwealth, and removed
themselves beyond the Seas to inhabit, shall be affessed
a double Proportion upon their Lands, Stocks, and
Chattels, of what others pay for the Lands, Stocks, and
Chattels, of the like Values in the Assessment: Which
Proviso was read the First and Second time.
Resolved, That the said Proviso be Part of the Bill.
Resolved, That this House doth agree to the rest of the
Amendments and Provisoes in this Bill.
A Proviso was tendered to the said Bill, That no Inhabitant, Merchant, or Trader, within the City of London, shall be exempted from the Payment of this Tax,
under any Pretence of Privilege whatsoever: which was
this Day read the First time.
And the Question being put, That this Proviso be read
the Second time;
It passed with the Negative.
Resolved, That the said Proviso be rejected.
A Proviso was tendered to the said Bill, That the
Doctors resident in the Doctors Commons shall be rated,
for their several and respective Chambers in the said
Doctors Commons, according to the Proportion of the
several Rents of the said Chambers, and not otherwise:
Which was this Day read the First time.
And the Question being put, That the said Proviso
be read the Second time;
It passed with the Assirmative.
The said Proviso was read the Second time.
And the Question being put, That the said Proviso
be Part of the Bill;
It passed with the Negative.
A Proviso being tendered to the said Bill, That the
Town of Lynne in Norfolk pay no more than according
to that Proportion which the Committee of Lords and
Commons, for the eastern Association, ordered that Town
should pay, as, by their Order of the Twentieth of
November 1645, appeareth, was this Day read.
The Question being propounded, That the said Proviso
be part of the Bill;
The House was divided.

Mayor of Hull.
Resolved, That this House doth leave it to Mr. Peregrine Pelham, to accept of, or refuse, the Office of Mayor
of the Town of Hull, to which he is elected.

Ordered, That all private Business be forborn for one
Month now next coming; to the end that the publick
Business may be dispatched, and not interrupted.
Resolved, That the House doth adjourn itself till
Tuesday next, Eight of Clock.
