Wardships.

After he had presented the said Bills, he delivered a Message from the Common House, to this Effect: That whereas a Motion was made by the said House, in the Beginning of the Parliament, for Conference about the Matter of Wards (which received some Impediment in the Proceeding at that Time, by reason of other Business), They were now desirous to make Petition to the King (wherein they requested the Furtherance of the Lords), that He will be pleased to give them hearing concerning that Matter, and to make some Project of an Offer to be presented to His Majesty in Lieu of the said Matter of Wardships; and moved; and whereas, at the same Time, their Lordships moved to have Conference about anotheir Particular, touching Respite of Homage (which they conceived to proceed from the Lords, out of Favour and good Respect towards them), they desired to make Petition to His Majesty, to allow Conference of this also, and of any other Branches growing from that Root; videlicet, Tenures in Capite, License of Alienation, Primer Seizins, and such like; concerning both which Particulars, they did hope to make it appear to His Majesty, by the Course they meant to propound, that He should not receive Loss or Prejudice; but rather Commodity and Advantage. Hereunto the Lords signified, They would give Answer upon Monday next, in the Forenoon.

Ecclesiastical Affairs.

A Motion made by the Lord Cecill, That the Common House should be remembered of those Things which the King gave Charge to be conferred of by Sub-Committees of both Houses, concerning Matters Ecclesiastical; whereupon Mr. Serjeant Crooke and Mr. D. Hone were sent to let them know, That the Lords had selected Nine Persons of this House, and desired them to appoint a competent Number of their House, for this Conference; and to meet upon Monday next, 21st May, at the Council Chamber in Court, by Two in the Afternoon; whereunto the Common House returned Answer, That they would select Twenty Persons of their House for this Conference; and would give Meeting at the Time and Place prefixed by their Lordships.

Bishop of Durham's Privilege. Sampson arrested.

Upon Complaint this Day made by the Lord Bishop of Elie, in the Behalf of the Lord Bishop of Durham, That one John Sampson, an ordinary Servant of the said Lord Bishop of Durham, hath been lately arrested, at the Suit of one William Smethes, upon a Writ out of the Chancery; and that the said Sampson doth remain under Bail, for the answering of the said Suit in the Chancery, contrary to the Privilege of the said High Court; it is Ordered, That the Lord Chancellor shall give present Direction for the Discharge of the said John Sampson of the Bail taken of him for that Cause, so as he may give his Attendance on the said Bishop of Durham, in his Place of Service, without further Trouble or Restraint.

19 Maii. Barony of Abergavenny.

This Day, a Motion was made by the Lord Admiral, touching Information to be given to the King of the Proceedings of the House in the Matter of the Barony of Berguevenie, and for Request to be made to His Majesty from the House, for the ennobling of both Parties; whereupon (after some Debate) it was Agreed, That the Commissioners for the Lord Marshal's Office should consider of some Matters appertaining to the said Motion, against Monday next, 21st May, at what Time the same might be propounded again; and, in the mean season, should confer with such of the Heralds as they should think meet for their better Information therein.
