Johnson.

Upon the Reading of the Petition of William Johnson, Constable of Eaton, William Sears, and Humphrey Sturte, complaining that Giles Johnson doth not pay them the Costs and Charges assessed by Sir Charles Cæsar and Sir Robert Rich, Knights (according to an Order of this House 30 Martii); it was this Day Ordered, upon the Question, That the said Gyles Johnson shall pay the same forthwith.

And Memorandum, That the Assessment of the said Charges was read also.

Forging the Earl of Huntingdon's Protections.

The Earl of Clare reported the Examinations of George Gardner's Three Witnesses, taken by the Lords Sub-committees for Privileges, according to the Order of this House 23 Martii; which Examinations being read, and the said George Gardener, being demanded at the Bar what he could say in Excuse of his high Contempt, confessed that he had bought and sold Ten of these Protections; for which he humbly craved Pardon, and expressed his hearty Sorrow and Repentance for the same; but he absolutely denied that he did insert any Name in any one of the said Blank Protections.

Gardner sentenced.

Whereupon the said Gardner was withdrawn; and it was Ordered, That the said George Gardner shall be set on the Pillory at Westm. To-morrow, by Nine of the Clock in the Morning, and shall stand there by the Space of Two Hours, with a Paper on his Head, declaring his Offence: videlicet, For Buying and selling of counterfeited Protections, Under the Hand and Seal of a Peer in Parliament. And it is further Ordered, That he the said George Gardener shall be afterwards carried down to Norwich, and shall there stand on the Pillory upon a Market-day, after Easter Holidays, with the like Paper on his Head.

This Day Mr. Attorney General, Mr. Serjeant Rychardson, and Mr. Serjeant Crew, being present; and being demanded by the Lords, if they were ready to set forth any Title for His Majesty to the Office of Great Chamberlain of England;

Mr. Attorney did thereupon inform their Lordships, That they had taken His Majesty's Title to the said Office to their Consideration, each of them apart, and after upon Conference together. And, although they had observed some Things which might give Occasion of Doubt, yet they had found no such sufficient Ground as they thought fit to offer to their Lordships.

But they humbly desired, on the Behalf of His Majesty, That, in this, as is usual in all other Cases of like Nature in Courts of Justice, there be a salvo jure Regis, if any Title may appear for His Majesty hereafter.

Committee for certifying to His Majesty the Determination of the House, touching the Earldom of Oxford and the Office of Great Chamberlain.

The Names of the Committee appointed to draw up a Certificate, to be presented unto His Majesty, concerning the Opinion and Advice of their Lordships, upon His Majesty's References unto them of the Competition for the Earldom of Oxon, &c. and the Office of Great Chamberlain of England: videlicet,
