Footnotes

  • 1. The k. tried to secure the el. of Guy de Mona as dn. (Anglo-Norman Letters and Petitions ed. M. D. Legge (Oxford, 1941) pp. 238-9). Le Neve-Hardy states that he was el. on 10 Aug. 1396 but no evidence has been found for this.
  • 2. 6 July is given in the Canterbury obit (Lambeth Palace MS. 20 f. 198b) as the date of d. of John Forest, dn. of Wells, but the Wells register seems the more accurate source.
  • 3. There is no evidence that Henry Webber was dn. for a short time after the d. of Carent (Wharton 1 590). There has possibly been confusion because a Henry Webber was then dn. of Exeter, 1459-1477.
  • 4. Polydore Vergil occ. as dn. of Wells 1 June 1515 (L. & P. 11 i No. 546). This is probably a scribal error since he was then archdcn. of Wells.
