Valuations 1254 12m.; 1291 £34 6s. 8d. (Taxatio p. 288a).

As archdcn. of St Asaph participated in coronation of young kg. Henry 14 June 1170 and left by pope to abp.'s judgement 10 Sept. 1170 (Corresp. of Becket II no. 507 (at pp. 1294-5)).

Adam

Occ. as archdcn. of St Asaph twice 1205 x c. 1210 (Cart. Haughmond nos. 657, 1172).

M. David

First occ. as archdcn. of St Asaph 27 May 1231 (Pat. Rolls 1225-32 p. 436). Also chanc. of princes of north-west Wales and envoy in diplomatic negotiations with kg. (see Stephenson, Governance pp. 31, 223 etc.). Occ. frequently. Last occ. as archdcn. 15 May 1240 (Litt. Wall. no. 2). Last occ. without title of archdcn., as chanc. and clerk of Dafydd ap Llywelyn, 17 March x 28 Apr. 1241 (Litt. Wall. no. 15), and 8 Aug. 1241 (CPR 1232-47 p. 257). Perhaps the same as David chanc. of Llywelyn who occ. 27 Apr. 1242 (Close Rolls 1237-42 p. 357). Perhaps father of M. Adam son of David, possibly can. of St Asaph (below, list 33).

Occ. as archdcn. of St Asaph once only, 23 July 1250 (Cart. Shrewsbury II no. 365).

David

Occ. as archdcn. of St Asaph 18 Feb. 1266 (CPR 1258-66 p. 557). Presum. to be identified with unnamed archdcn. who occ. 1 Sept. 1267 (ibid. 1266-72 p. 102) and 12 Apr. 1272 (Litt. Wall. no. 165), and with D. archdcn. of St Asaph who occ. 25 March 1272 (LCA I 135 = Willis, St Asaph II 31-2).

Gruffudd ab Iorwerth (fn. 1)

First occ. as archdcn. of St Asaph 27 Jan. 1277 (CPR 1272-81 p. 191). Occ. several times in 1280s (Cal. Var. Chancery Rolls p. 183; Litt. Wall. nos. 272, 93, 132, 141, 356; Close Rolls 1279-88 p. 413). An executor and beneficiary of bp. Anian II's will, dated 21 Feb. 1288, proved 1 May 1293 (Fisher, 'Three Welsh wills' pp. 186, 187). To be identified with 'G' archdcn. who occ. 6 Apr. 1294 (LCA I 9). Last occ. on res. of archdcnry. 5 Oct. 1306 (ibid. pp. 85-6; cf. ibid. p. 30).
