The completion of this volume owes much to the kindness and generosity of Professor C. N. L. Brooke, who lent the copious notes made by himself and the late Professor Z. N. Brooke on the early dignitaries and prebendaries of St. Paul's, and at every stage gave helpful advice on both general and specific points. Professor F. Wormald was always ready to discuss the work, and has given constant encouragement and practical guidance. I wish to record my thanks to Professor C. R. Cheney, to Mrs. Mary Cheney, to Sir Charles Clay and to Miss Jane Sayers for their help and for many invaluable references; and to Dr. Decima Douie, who kindly allowed me to see in proof her edition of part of archbishop Pecham's register. I am grateful also to the staff of the Library of the Dean and Chapter of St. Paul's, Mr. A. R. B. Fuller and Mr. J. Sumner, for their ready assistance.
