First preb. in cats., 'Robertus archidiaconus'. Always occ. as archdcn., without territ. title, but presum. of Middlesex, by June 1102, to Apr. 1106 or later.

Hugh de Boklande

Occ. in cats. between Robert and Hugh II, 'Hugo de Boklande'. Does not occ. as can. Possibly to be identified with sheriff of eight counties under king Henry I, who d. c. 1115 (see Brooke, Composition p. 124 n. 70).

Hugh II

Occ. in cats. between Hugh de Boklande and Hugh III, 'Hugo secundus' (Cat. II), 'Hugo tres fratres' (Cat. I). Not otherwise known.

Hugh III

Occ. in cats. between Hugh II and Nicholas Scriba, 'Hugo' (Cat. I), 'Hugo tres fratres' (Cat. II). Not otherwise known.

Occ. in cats. between Godfrey and Gilbert de Plesseto, 'Ricardus de Storteford'. Not appd. until after 1174, when Occ. as clk. (G.F.L. no. 427(1)). First occ. as can. 1176 (G.F.L. no. 427(2)). Occ. this preb. [21 Apr. × 30 Dec. 1196] (Gibbs nos. 103-4). (fn. 6) Also mag. schol. by 1183, to after Oct. 1200 (above p. 26).

M. Gilbert de Plesseto

Occ. in cats. between Richard de Stortford and William de Sancte Marie Ecclesia, 'Ailbertus de Plesseto'. 'Ailbertus' not otherwise known, and cats. almost certainly in error for 'Gilbertus'. Occ. prob. not yet can. [c. 1195 × March 1204] (Cart. Colec. 11 542-3), (fn. 7) and [May 1199 × March 1204] (reg. J. Stokesley: Guildhall Libr., MS. 9531/11 fo. 54r). (fn. 8) First certain occ. as can. 7 Oct. 1205 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 130r, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'F'), but prob. to be identified with M. Gilbert, can., who occ. [March 1204] (Gibbs no. 58), and called can. on an occ. possibly [Sept. 1203 × March 1204] (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 48r, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'B'). (fn. 9) Occ. this preb. 1215/16 (A/39/1369). Also archdcn. of London from before Apr. 1214, to 1215/16 or later.

M. William de Sancte Marie Ecclesia I

Occ. in cats. between Gilbert de Plesseto and John of Bulmer, 'Willelmus quondam [Cat. II omits quondam] archidiaconus London'. Presum. to be identified with William de Sancte Marie Ecclesia, archdcn. of London by 1217, to March 1223 or later. Perhaps res. archdcnry., but retained this preb., and to be identified with William de Sancte Marie Ecclesia who occ. as can. [May 1225 × June 1229] (A/30/ 406). (fn. 10)

John of Bulmer (fn. 11)

Occ. in cats. between William de Sancte Marie Ecclesia and William La Feite, 'Johannes de Bolemer'. First occ. as can. 7 Nov. 1243 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 24v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's 'in thecis') and 1243/4 (WD 1 fo. 49b), (fn. 12) but almost certainly to be identified with John son of Ralph, who occ. as can. [July 1236 × Sept. 1241] (cart. of Hospitallers: B.M. Cotton Nero E. vi fo. 7r), (fn. 13) and who occ. before 1239 as John son of Ralph of Bulmer, not called can. (Gibbs no. 300). Occ. frequently as can. until 1260, but prob. transf. to preb. of Caddington Minor after June 1252.

William La Feite

Occ. in cats. between John of Bulmer and Henry Lovel, 'Willelmus le Faite' (Cat. I), 'Willelmeus la Feyte' (Cat. II). Prob. transf. from preb. of Consumpta before Sept. 1254. Last occ. as can. Apr. 1275 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 150r, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'H'), and [1274 × Oct. 1276] (A/29/336). (fn. 14) Possibly held unident. preb. before Oct. 1262.

M. Henry Lovel

Occ. in cats. between William La Feite and Hugh de Kendale, 'Henricus Lovel'. Occ. as can. once only, 16 July 1282 (Reg. J. Pecham II 48). Steward of abp. of Canterbury from July 1279 to d. shortly before 16 May 1287 (ibid. 1 11, 241-2).

Hugh de Kendale

Occ. in cats. between Henry Lovel and Ralph de Malling, 'Hugo de Kendale'. Instal. as can. between Sept. 1286 and 19 Apr. 1287 (Hale p. 173; Westminster, D. & C., Ch. 13880). Occ. this preb. c. 1294 (Liber F valor). (fn. 15) D. as preb. by 8 Apr. 1295 (Reg. Winchelsey 1 22).

Ralph de Malling
