Theobald

First preb. in cats., 'Theobaldus archidiaconus Essex'. Not otherwise known, but had presum. d. or res. as archdcn. of Essex by June 1102 (cf. above p. 12).

Astan

Occ. in cats. between Theobald and Robert son of Wulfred, 'Astanus'. Not otherwise known.

Robert son of Wulfred

Occ. in cats. between Astan and Gilbert, 'Robertus filius Wluredi [Wuluredi, Cat. II]'. First occ. as can. 1115/16 (A/24/1478 and WD 4 fos. 19/23v-20/24r, pd. in Rep. pp. 61b-62a). Last certain occ. 1150/1 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 84v, from missing Liber F fo. 35), but may occ. later, [1138 × Sept. 1152] (WD 4 fo. 44/48r, pd. in Rep. p. 66a), (fn. 1) and [Apr. 1138 × c. 1154] (Gibbs no. 176). (fn. 2) Brother of Geoffrey son of Wulfred, preb. of Weldland (ibid.), and son of Wulfred son of Goldman, preb. of Weldland.

Gilbert (fn. 3)

Occ. in cats. between Robert son of Wulfred and Robert de Clifford, 'Gilebertus nepos archidiaconi'. Not otherwise known. Possibly related to Theobald, archdcn. of Essex, preb. of Portpool (see above). Possibly to be identified with M. Gilbert, who occ. as can. [1163 × 72] (G.F.L. nos. 383-4), and [1170 × 72] (G.F.L. no. 391), but Robert de Clifford also occ. on latter occasion (see below).

Robert de Clifford (fn. 4)

Occ. in cats. between Gilbert and William de La Fere, 'Robertus de Clifford'. First occ. as can. [1170 × 72] (G.F.L. no. 391), and before 1174 (A/23/1721, pd. in Rep. p. 24a-b). (fn. 5) Occ. as can. c. 1192 (D.S.R. I). Last occ. [March 1204 × Feb. 1215] (Gibbs no. 168).

M. William de La Fere

Occ. in cats. between Robert de Clifford and William Heremita, 'Willelmus de Lafere'. Occ. as can. 1217/18 (A/29/331). Prob. to be identified with M. William de Fer', who occ. not called can. 19 Oct. 1226, nephew of Peter of Ste.-Mère-Eglise, treas. (A/66/1).

William Heremita

Occ. in cats. between William de La Fere and Roger de Orsett, 'Willelmus Heremita'. Occ., not called can., together with M. William de Fer', prob. his predecessor, 19 Oct. 1226 (A/66/1). Occ. prob. as can. between June 1235 and June 1236 (reg. J. Stokesley: Guildhall Libr., MS. 9531/11 fo. 54v). First certain occ. as can. [Nov. 1229 × June 1236] (A/29/366). (fn. 6) Last occ. [Apr. 1234 × Dec. 1237] (cart. of Walden: B.M., Harley MS. 3697 fo. 40r), (fn. 7) and [c. 1231 × Dec. 1237] (Gibbs no. 153). (fn. 8)

M. Roger de Orsett (fn. 9)

Occ. in cats. between William Heremita and Edmund Brito, 'Rogerus de Oresethe [Orsete, Cat. II]'. First occ. as can. 1 Aug. 1239 (A/38/1220). Occ. this preb. 1241 (A/24/608). Also precentor by May 1241, to 1243 or later.

Edmund Brito

Occ. in cats. between Roger de Orsett and Arcadulfus Burgund', 'Edmundus Brytho [Brito, Cat. II]'. Not otherwise known, unless to be identified with Edmund Le Breton, who became rector of Tickhill (Yorks., West), 17 Feb. 1239 (Reg. W. Gray, ed. J. Raine (Surtees Soc. lvi) p. 84).

Arcadulfus Burgund'

Occ. in cats. between Edmund Brito and Philip son of John, 'Arcalduldus Burging' ' (Cat. I), 'Arcadulfus Burgund' ' (Cat. II). Not otherwise known, unless cat. order at fault and name corrupt form of Adenulf: M. Adenulf dei Conti of Anagni occ. as can. of St. Paul's 20 Sept. 1276 (C.P.R. 1272-81 p. 161 and see below p. 91).

Philip son of John son of Geoffrey

Occ. in cats. between Arcadulfus Burgund' and Robert de Stowe, 'Philippus filius Johannis filius Galfridi [Cat. II omits filius Galfridi]'. Occ. as clk. of London dioc. between 12 Nov. 1259 and 1 May 1260 (Westminster, D. & C., Ch. 8581). D. by 23 May 1266 (Westminster, D. & C., Ch. 8591).

M. Robert de Stowe

Occ. in cats. between Philip son of John and Dionysius de Crienciis, 'Robertus de Stowe'. First certain occ. as can. 29 Apr. 1280 (C.P.R. 1272-81 p. 368), but prob. can. when occ. 8 Jan. 1279 (A/25/1708). Said to be 'novam inchoans residenciam', 28 Sept. 1281 (Statutes p. 188). Last occ. 29 May 1283 (Reg. J. Pecham 11 64), and 1283 (Hale p. 167).

Dionysius de Crienciis

Occ. in cats. between Robert de Stowe and Gilbert de Segrave, 'Dionisius de Crienciis'. Occ. this preb. c. 1294 (Liber F valor). (fn. 10)

M. Gilbert de Segrave (fn. 11)

Occ. in cats. between Dionysius de Crienciis and Thomas de Segrave, 'magister Gilbertus de Segrave [Cat. II omits magister]'. First occ. as can. 24 June 1301 (Reg. S. de Gandavo, ed. C. T. Flower and M. C. B. Dawes (Canterbury and York Soc. xl, xli) 1 58), 1301 (WD 16 fo. 166/168v) and [May 1299 × Sept. 1302] (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 131v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's pyx 'T').
