M. Durand

First preb. in cats., 'magister Durandus [Cat. II omits magister]'. First occ. as Durand the can., holding land in Twyford, of cans.' demesne, prob. not yet a prebend, 1086 (Domesday Book 1 fo. 127b; cf. Gibbs pp. xxiii-iv). Perhaps preb. by 1102 (Gibbs p. xxiii, and no. 178). Occ. as can. 1103/4 (WD 4 fo. 40/44r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 65a). Last occ. 1111/12 (A/24/521, pd. in Rep. p. 26a). Prob. mag. schol., first occ. c. 1102, d. some time before Jan. 1127 (above p. 25).

Robert of Caen

Occ. in cats. between Durand and Richard Ruffus II, 'Robertus de Cadomo [Cadamo, Cat. II]'. First certain occ. as can. 1132/3 (WD 4 fo. 53/57r-v, pd. in Rep. p. 67b), but may occ. earlier, [c. 1108 × Apr. 1138] (WD 4 fo. 51/55v, pd. in Rep. p. 67a) (fn. 1) and [1115 × c. 1138] (WD 4 fo. 29/33r-v, pd. in Rep. pp. 63b-64a). (fn. 2) Last certain occ. as can. 1150/1 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 84v, from missing Liber F fo. 35), but may occ. later, [1138 × c. 1154] (WD 4 fos. 40/44r-41/45r, pd. in Rep. p. 65a-b). (fn. 3)

Richard Ruffus II (fn. 4)

Occ. in cats. between Robert of Caen and Thomas of Hurstbourne, 'Ricardus pauus Ruffus [Rufus, Cat. II]'. First occ. as can. [1162 × 74] (A/11/1071, pd. in Rep. p. 12a; A/30/496, cal. in Rep. p. 33a; A/71/1797, cal. in Rep. p. 50b), (fn. 5) but perhaps appd. before May 1162 by Richard de Belmeis II, bp. of London (1152-62), who was possibly his uncle (suggested in G.F. p. 287). Occ. as can. c. 1192 (D.S.R. II). Last occ. [21 Apr. × 30 Dec. 1196] (Gibbs nos. 103, 186). (fn. 6) D. as can. before May 1201 (A/70/1757, cal. incompletely in Rep. p. 49a). (fn. 7) Commem. 18 Jan. M. Thomas of Hurstbourne (fn. 8)

Occ. in cats. between Richard Ruffus II and William of Potterne, 'Thomas de Husseburne [Cat. II omits de]'. Occ. as royal official from 1184 (Eyton, Itin. Hen. II pp. 254, 272, 277, 291). First occ. as can. [Apr. 1196 × May 1201] (A/70/1757, cal. incompletely in Rep. p. 49a). (fn. 9) Prob. d. between 20 Nov. 1199 and Sept. 1200 (D. M. Stenton, English Justice between the Norman Conquest and the Great Charter, 1066- 1215 (1965) p. 99 n.). Certainly d. as can. before May 1201 (A/24/1062, cal. in Rep. p. 26a). (fn. 10)

M. William of Potterne (fn. 11)

Occ. in cats. between Thomas of Hurstbourne and Maurice of Harlow, 'Willelmus de Poterne'. First occ. as can. [c. 1201 × May 1212] (Gibbs nos. 84, 139; A/33/797; A/38/1211). (fn. 12) Last occ. [1212 × Apr. 1214] (Gibbs no. 255). Commem. 16 Feb. (Obit. I fo. 10v), 17 Feb. (Obits. II fo. 107v, III fo. 94v, IV pp. 63, 77).

Maurice of Harlow (fn. 13)

Occ. in cats. between William of Potterne and William de Lodnes, 'Mauricius de Herlawe'. First occ. as can. 13 Feb. 1218 (Westminster, D. & C., Muniment bk. xi, 'Domesday' fo. 447r). Last occ. after Nov. 1229 (Gibbs nos. 191, 277-8, 281, 294 etc)., and after c. 1231 (Gibbs no. 153; A/29/366). (fn. 14) Also possibly precentor, c. 1236. Possibly to be identified with M. Maurice who occ., not called can., [May 1225 × 1231] (Moore, St. Barts. 1 389 n. 1). (fn. 15)

M. William de Lodnes (fn. 16)

Occ. in cats. between Maurice of Harlow and Robert de Insula, 'Willelmus de Lodnes'. Presum. not appd. until after 18 July 1236, when occ. as bp.'s chapl. (Gibbs no. 87). Certainly occ. as can. 14 Dec. 1237 (Gibbs no. 99), and perhaps can. earlier, [June 1235 × Dec. 1237] (reg. J. Stokesley: Guildhall Libr., MS. 9531/11 fo. 142v). (fn. 17)

M. Robert de Insula

Occ. in cats. between William de Lodnes and William Passemer, 'Robertus de Insula'. Occ. as can. [Apr. 1234 × Nov. 1241] (A/30/426; A/32/601). (fn. 18) Said to have d. between 30 Sept. and 25 Dec. 1246 (Ann. Dunstable, Ann. Mon. 111 171), but presum. wrongly, because possibly to be identified with M. Robert de Insula, who was archdcn. of Colchester by Aug. 1248 (prob. by Jan. 1244), to Dec. 1252 or later (see above pp. 19- 20).

M. William Passemer

Occ. in cats. between Robert de Insula and Robert de Drayton, 'Willelmus Passemer per commutat.' (Cat. I), 'Willelmus Passemer' (Cat. II). Presum. transf. from preb. of Consumpta before Aug. 1257. Does not occ. as can. until 21 Aug. 1262 (Statutes p. 385). Presum. transf. to preb. of Wilsden after June 1261. Also archdcn. of London by June 1272, to Apr. 1275 or later.

Robert de Drayton

Occ. in cats. between William Passemer and Bartholomew of Ferentino, 'Robertus de Draitone [Dreitone, Cat. II] thesaurarius'. Not can. until after 26 Feb. 1275 (reg. J. Stokesley: Guildhall Libr., MS. 9531/11 fo. 155r-v). First occ. as can. 7 July 1275 (Cart. Clerkenwell p. 253). Occ. this preb. c. 1294 (Liber F valor). (fn. 19) Also treas. by June 1278, to May 1298 or later; d. before 3 July 1302.

M. Bartholomew of Ferentino (fn. 20)

Occ. in cats. between Robert de Drayton and Laurence Fastolf, 'Bartholomeus de Ferentin [Ferentino, Cat. II]'. First occ. as can. 8 March 1298 (Reg. Bon. VIII no. 2434), but presum. not this preb. until after May 1298 (see above). Last occ. 1309 (A/70/1772).
