PREBEND

Warminster (Wilts.) a royal manor 1066 and 1086 (DB I 64d). 2 hides in Warminster, formerly held by Walter son of Edward, given to cath. by Henry I 1107 × 35 (RSO I 202, cal. Regesta II no. 1972); conf. by pope 26 Nov. 1146 (PUE II no. 53 p. 210) and Henry II 1158 (RSO I 204).

Preb. prob. in existence by c. 1150 (Psalter list). Preb. taken into royal hands during Interdict, valued c. 1210 at £5 (Interdict Docs. p. 20, cf. ibid. pp. 7, 16). Preb. consisted of 2 hides in Warminster 1242 (Book of Fees II 737; cf. Taxatio p. 182a). Exempt from archdcn. 1222 (RSO I 338).

Occ. this preb. several times: first Oct. 1226 × Feb. 1227 (app. 1), last 20 March 1232 (Close R. 1231-4 p. 134). Occ. as can. frequently. Last occ. 12 Jan. 1240 or 10 Jan. 1241 (Sar. Chs. p. 254). Not called Master in any occ. at Salisbury, but possibly to be identified with Master Peter Picot, who occ. as can. of Exeter June 1190 × June 1191 (H. P. R. Finberg, West Country Historical Studies (Newton Abbot, 1969) pp. 182-4). Possibly to be identified with M. Peter who ruled the schools some time between c. 1180 and 1214 (above p. 18 n. 4).

John de Polbergh gr. simple protection 2 Aug. 1283 (CPR 1281-92 p. 72). Occ. as can. 10 May 1288 (app. 3). Transf. to preb. Beminster I before d., and d. by 3 March 1298 (list 18).

M. Osbert de Baggeston
