LIST 7 ARCHDEACONS WITHOUT TERRITORIAL TITLE

Ricoard preb. unident., list 41

As Ricoard archdcn. he made a gift to Lewes priory in Moulscombe (Patcham parish) before 1118 (Early Yorks. Chs. VIII, ed. C. T. Clay (Yorks. Archaeol. Soc., 1949) no. 13; cf. Chart. Lewes I 13). Prob. to be identified with Ricoard, tenant of William de Warenne in Patcham 1086 (DB I 26b). His association with Lewes may suggest that he was a monastic archdcn.

Henry preb. unident., list 41

Occ. at Battle abbey 11 Nov. [1122] (Chron. Battle p. 126) and attests three chs. for Battle from same time (Acta nos. 4-6; for date see list 4, n. 34). Also attests a ch. of bp. Ralph Luffa for Lewes priory, before 14 Dec. 1123, which although spurious, may preserve a genuine witness clause (Acta no. 10). Both Battle and Lewes were to be in the archdcnry. of Lewes.

Roger preb. unident., list 41

Occ. attesting two chs. of bp. Seffrid I for Battle abbey, 12 Apr. 1125 × 1145, the first of which perhaps belongs to the period before c. 1139 (Acta nos. 13-14).

Robert preb. unident., list 41

Occ. twice only: 12 Apr. 1125 × 1145, perhaps after 1131 (Acta no. 16); and on or shortly after 25 Apr. 1147 (Early Yorks. Chs. VIII, ed. C. T. Clay (Yorks. Archaeol. Soc., 1949) no. 32). Mayr-Harting suggests a possible identification with Robert, nephew of bp. Seffrid I, who occ. 1130 (Pipe Roll 31 Hen. I p. 70; see Acta pp. 8-9).
