PREBEND

Churches of Heathfield and Selmeston (both E. Suss.). Suit over preb. 1220-1, settled in bp.'s favour Easter term 1221 (Curia Regis Rolls VIII 357-8, IX 234, 333, X 35).

Church of Selmeston, with chapels, granted to bp. as preb. prob. c. 1177, by Richard de Cahaignes (Chart. Chichester no. 309; for date cf. Curia Regis Rolls VIII 357 and Pipe Roll 23 Hen. II p. 191, of Sept. 1176 × Sept. 1177).

Church of Heathfield prebendal, with vicarage by 1236/7 (Chart. Chichester no. 1079, cf. no. 1067). Rent in Heathfield subject of fine Nov. 1262 (Suss. Fines II no. 684).

Warin

Clerk, presented to preb. by Richard de Cahaignes, temp. king Henry II (Curia Regis Rolls VIII 357-8), perhaps c. 1177 (see above). Died as preb., presum. before May or June 1217 (Curia Regis Rolls VIII 357 and below). Prob. to be identified with Warin who occ. as canon 1192/3 and 1197/8 (Acta nos. 84, 101).

John

Chapl. of bp. Richard Poore, by whom he was collated to this preb., 25 Jan. 1215 × May or June 1217 (Curia Regis Rolls VIII 357).

Nicholas Crassus

First occ. as canon 1226/7 (Walcott, Statutes p. 207 = Chart. Chichester no. 40). Occ. several times. Occ. as this preb. 1 Apr. 1234 × Aug. 1241 and 1236/7 (Chart. Chichester nos. 1067, 1079). Last occ. as canon Apr. 1239 (ibid. no. 507).

Next identified preb. is William de Thorntoft, royal clerk (CPR 1292-1301 p. 557), who had royal collation to this preb. 20 Apr. 1305 (CPR 1301-7 p. 338; also 2 Fasti VII 27), but does not otherwise occ.
