PREBEND

Selsey (W. Suss.) site of pre-Norman cathedral, bp.'s manor 1086 (DB I 17a; for the earlier history, see AS Chs. of Selsey, esp. nos. 1, 20 and notes).

First reference to preb. when land and houses in Selsey added to preb. March 1196 × c. 17 March 1204 (Acta no. 95). Ruling by bp. John of Climping, 24 Aug. 1259, that this preb. to be collated to a theologian who would lecture, while M. John de Coruleto held preb. Wightring (Chart. Chichester no. 460; list 37); obligation to lecture reverted to preb. Wightring thereafter.

See Inq. Non. p. 366b; VCH Suss. IV 208.

Dcn.-preb.

Valuation 1291 £21 6s 8d (Taxatio p. 137b).

PREBENDARIES

M. Richard of Felpham (fn. 89)

Prob. not canon when first occ., 16 Nov. 1180 × 1186 (Acta no. 117). Also occ. without title three times 1187 × 97 (ibid. nos. 87, 122, 134). Certainly occ. as canon 1197/8 (ibid. no. 101). Occ. as this preb. March 1196 × c. 17 March 1204 (ibid. no. 95). Last occ. 11 July 1204 × 21 Aug. 1207 (Chart. Chichester no. 339, where Peckham wrongly extends 'R.' to 'R[obert]'). (fn. 90)

M. John de Coruleto

Not certainly canon when first occ., 14 Apr. 1247 (Chart. Chichester no. 221). Canon before 17 July 1247 (ibid. no. 596, temp. John of Climping, archdcn. of Chichester, list 8). Also occ. 24 Aug. 1248 and 22 Apr. 1249 (Chart. Chichester nos. 1095, 839). Transf. from this preb. to preb. Wightring 4 Nov. 1256 × 24 Aug. 1259 (ibid. no. 460; see list 37).

Ruling by bp. John of Climping, 24 Aug. 1259, that this preb. to be collated to a theologian who would lecture, instead of Wightring (Chart. Chichester no. 460). Next identified preb. is prob. M. Andrew de Interampni, who had conf. of papal prov. to next vacant preb. 7 Sept. 1316, and died prob. as this preb. by 18 May 1318 (2 Fasti VII 39).
