LIST 11 PREBENDARIES OF COLWALL (BARTON IN COLWALL)

PREBEND

In 1086 the church of Hereford held Colwall in demesne (DB I 182a-b). Barton, now represented by Barton Court, forms part of Colwall. In c. 1291 the preb., endowed with two cars. of land and some rents, was assessed at £13 6s 8d for pope Nicholas's taxation (Taxatio p. 169b: Berton) and in 1294 at 15m in a list entered in bp. Swinfield's register (Reg. Swinfield p. 305: Berthone). Valor III 8 assessed the preb. at £15 4s 4½d; the income consisted of £13 6s 8d in rent and £1 17s 8½d in small commons.

Received royal gr. of preb. of Berton in the church of Hereford 8 Dec. 1268 in the episcopal vacancy (CPR 1266-72 p. 306). John 'called Walram' occ. as can. of Wells 13 June 1258 (CPL I 359; see 1 Fasti VII 91).

M. Henry of Newark (fn. 1)

First occ. as can. of Hereford 1269 x 1275 (PRO E 327/445), 1271 x 1274 (Reg. Swinfield p. 57), and 22 Feb. 1273 (Hereford ch. no. 1339, issued 5 Nov. 1282). Occ. as absent can. 24 June 1273 and as resident can. 30 Sept. 1273 (Capes, Charters pp. 138-9). Was in possession of preb. of 'La Berton in Colewell and Hope' by 5 Feb. 1279, when he was gr. free warren in all the demesne lands of his preb. (CPR 1272-81 p. 302). Still in possession of preb. of Berton, i.e. Colwall, c.1291 (Taxatio p. 169). Can. of York minster from 20 Dec. 1281; archdcn. of Richmond 28 Apr. 1279-90 and dean of York 12 May 1290 - 7 May 1296; el. abp. of York 7 May 1296, cons. 15 June 1298, d. 15 Aug. 1299 (1 Fasti VI 7, 12, 51, 80, 100, 106).

M. William de Sardene (fn. 2)

Occ. as clk. in dioc. of Canterbury 1282-6 (CPL I 467, 473, 489); professor of civil law (ibid. p. 489); coll. 17 June 1297 to preb. of 'Bartonsham', clearly an error for Barton, i.e. Colwall (Reg. Swinfield p. 530); d. as preb. 5 Nov. 1303 (1 Fasti III 39; cf. Reg. Swinfield pp. 395, 535). Archdcn. of Oxford 1298-1303 and preb. of Lincoln (1 Fasti III 39, 106). Preb. of Salisbury (ibid. IV 52) and of Wells. Dean of court of Arches (Biog. Ox. III 1642).
