Footnotes

1 The Lord Keeper, John Williams, bp. of Lincoln, protested strongly to the duke of Buckingham at this appointment, 24 Dec. 1624, on the grounds that Scott was at least £5000 in debt, was a gambler and no scholar (Cabala (London, 1691) pp. 279-80). His creditor had secured the deanery for him, with the duke's help, in order to recover the debt (J. Hacket, Scrinia Reserata (London, 1692) pt. i p. 207).
