2 The preb. of Henfield was annexed to the see of Chichester by bp. Sherborne at the latest by 1531, and probably by 1519, possibly coinciding with the establishment of Bury preb., 1510-18 (Suss. Arch. Coll. xxix 33; Ep. 1/1/4 f. 84; Valor Ecclesiasticus (1810-34) 1 300-2; Ep. 1/1/5 f. 30; Suss. Arch. Coll. lxxviii 138). There is no record in the bishop's, chapter or royal archives of any royal licence for the annexation, such as should have been obtained. The suggestion has been made by Mr. W. D. Peckham that the government of Charles I had discovered this omission, and offered to gr. such a licence (for a consideration), but needed a prebendary to give his assent to the union.
