churches of his diocese the sentence of excommunication, dated 1 September 1381, pronounced by John prior of Christ Church Canterbury against
those who killed Simon late archbishop of Canterbury, sons of damnation
who violently entered the palace and other manors of the archbishop
against his wish and the wishes of his ministers, drank his wine and seized
his goods; they broke into his prison at Maidstone (Maidenston), seized
the prisoners and compelled them to depart; broke into his chase known as
'le Bruyl' in Chichester diocese and the adjacent parks; hunted, killed and
took away the wild beasts there; not content with this they entered the
Tower of London, beat and wounded the archbishop and finally took him
outside the Tower and decapitated him, and carried his head, to which his
episcopal hat was affixed by a nail in the brain, through the city shouting,
'Here is the predator's head'; then they placed it on London bridge. For all
