Die Jovis, 19 Octobris, 1643.

PRAYERS.

Lecturer at Harwich.

ALETTER from the Mayor of Harwich, of the Seventeenth of October; complaining against Wood their Lecturer, was this Day read:

And the Men, that brought up this Letter, was called in; and delivered Two Petitions, subscribed with many Hands: The which were read: And

It is Ordered, That the Examination of all the Matters set forth in those Petitions, be referred to the Committee for plundered Ministers; who are forthwith to send for the said Mr. Wood, and for the Witnesses; and to examine throughly the Businesses objected against him; and to report it to the House.

Recommending Ministers.

Ordered, That the Clerk take notice of all such, Members as recommend any Man to a Living, by way of Sequestration, or otherwise.

Proceedings against Allestree.

A Letter from the Committee at Derby, of the Tenth of September 1643, concerning Mr. Allestree, Recorder of Derby; and divers Articles against the said Mr. Allestree; were this Day read.

Resolved, That the Committee at Derby be required to sequester the Estate of Mr. Allestree Recorder of Derby, and a Member of this House, for his neglecting and deserting the Service of the Commonwealth, in not attending in the House, as he ought to do.

Ordered, That the Committee at Derby do call before them Mr. Allestree, and receive his Answer to the Articles exhibited against him, and sent up to this House: And that the Mayor of Derby do produce the Patent, by which Mr. Allestree pretends himself to be Recorder; and send a Copy to this House.

Resolved, &c. That Mr. Allestree shall be forthwith discharged for being or sitting any longer as a Member of this House, during this Parliament; for not appearing upon Summons, and not attending the Service of the House, as, according to his Duty, he ought to do.

Ordnance Stores.

Ordered, That it be referred to the Committee for the Safety, to furnish Twenty Barrels of Powder, and Two Tun of Match, to Sir Jo. Gell's Agent, for the Service of the County of Derby.

Taking of Bedford.

A Letter from Hitchin, of the Eighteenth of October, from Sir Jo. Norwich, relating the taking of Bedford, was this Day read; and returned by Sir Oliver Luke to my Lord General; with a Desire that he would take speedy Course herein.

Forces for Isle of Wight.

Ordered, That my Lord General be desired to grant a Commission to Sir Gregory Norton, to raise an Hundred Men in Sussex, for the Isle of Wight: And that Mr. Lisle be desired to acquaint my Lord General with this Desire.

Northern Committee.

Ordered, That my Lord Mayor be desired to call a Common Council, to meet To-morrow, at Three of Clock; to the end that they may nominate Two of their own Body to join with a Committee appointed by both Houses of Parliament to go into the Northern Parts, upon such Instructions as they shall receive from the said Houses.

Mr. Recorder and Mr. Hatcher are appointed to go to the Common Council, to, attend this Service.

League and Covenant.

Sir Dudley North, Mr. Nutt, Mr. Weston, Mr. Jesson, Mr. Sandys, Lord Cranborne, Captain Wingate, this Day took the solemn League and Covenant, and subscribed the same.

Forces for Bedfordshire.

Sir Oliver Luke brings Answer, That my Lord General will use all Care and Diligence in taking care to send Forces into Bedfordshire.

Conference.

Ordered, That, at the Conference, when the Articles are delivered against the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Reasons shall be delivered, why this House cannot assent to the Lords Proviso to the additional Ordinance concerning the Fourteen thousand Pounds within the Line of Communication.

Trial of Waller.

Ordered, That, To-morrow, at Ten of Clock, it shall be debated and considered in what Manner Mr. Waller shall be tried.

Martial Law.

Ordered, That Mr. Strode do desire my Lord General to grant a standing Commission for the Trial of Offenders by martial Law.

Message to Lords.

Sir Walth. Erle went up to the Lords to desire a Conference, by Committees of both Houses, at such Time as their Lordships shall think fit, touching further Articles of Impeachment against the Archbishop of Canterbury, and concerning an Ordinance for raising of Monies within the Line of Communication: - Carried up with him the Ordinance for bringing in the Arrears of Monies set and leviable by several Ordinances upon the City of London: The Order for the Committee, formerly appointed to treat with the Scotts Commissioners, to treat with the Divines from Scotland: The Order for the Twentieth Part, and Sequestrations, to be levied in Lincolneshire by the Earl of Manchester, in the like manner as in the other Six associated Counties: The Ordinance concerning Saltpetre.

Archbishop of Canterbury's Impeachment.

The further Articles of Impeachment against Wm. Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury, of High Treason, and divers high Crimes and Misdemeanors, all ingrossed, were this Day read: and, by Vote upon the Question, assented unto; and ordered to be presented unto the Lords, at a Conference.

League and Covenant.

Ordered, That such of the Wardours of the Tower, as do refuse to take and subscribe the late solemn League and Covenant, shall be forthwith discharged of their Places, as Wardours, and others put in their Places: And that the Lord Mayor and Committee of the Tower do see this Order put in Execution.

Great Seal.

An Ordinance concerning the Great Seal was this Day read; and re-committed.

Sir Rob. Harley Went up to the Lords, to desire, that one Part of this Conference may be concerning the Great Seal: And the Lords are likewise to be desired, at this Conference, to nominate such Members of their House, as they shall think fit, to join with a proportionable Number of this House, to be instructed as Commissioners with the Great Seal.

Gloucester Garison.

Ordered, That the Committee for the Garison of Gloucester shall have Power, and are hereby authorized, to receive the Rents, and to sell, and convert into present Money, the Goods, Stock, and Cattle, of Sir George Sandys, to be employed, upon Account, for the Use of the Garison of Gloucester; and to authorize such Persons as they shall think fit, for the Purposes aforesaid.

Hale's Sequestration.

Ordered, That Sir Edw. Hales be brought hither To-morrow Morning, and heard, concerning the Sequestration of his Estate: And the Serjeant is to take care, that he be brought hither accordingly.

Money for the City.

Ordered, That Mr. Robert Goodwyn do pay in the Five hundred Pounds, in his Hands, of the weekly Assessments of Surry, to Sir Gilb. Gerard, Treasurer at Wars, for the Use of the City.

Maimed Soldiers, &c.

An Ordinance for the Relief and Maintenance of sick and maimed Soldiers; and of the poor Widows and Children of Soldiers slain in the Service of the Parliament; was this Day read; and committed to the Committee for maimed Soldiers: And all that will come, are to have Voices at it: And are to meet this Afternoon, at Two of Clock, in the Court of Wards: And the Consideration of Sutton's Hospital, and other Hospitals within and about this Town, is referred to this Committee: And have Power to send for Parties, Witnesses, Papers, Records.

Christ Church, &c. Hospitals.

Ordered, That Mr. Recorder do recommend from this House to the Lord Mayor and Court of Aldermen, that in the Admission of Children into the Hospital of Christ Church, they will take especial Care, that the Children of such Persons, whose Parents have been slain in the Service of the King and Parliament, be preferred and admitted, in the first Place, upon all Vacancies; and likewise, that Care may be taken, that in Little St. Bartholomew's, and St. Thomas' Hospital, such sick and maimed Soldiers as have been in the Service of the King and Parliament, may be received and admitted in the first Place.

Answer from Lords.

Sir Walth. Erle brings Answer, that the Lords are now in Debate of a great Business, and therefore will send Answer by Messengers of their own to all the Messages carried up by him.

Judgment against Trevor.

The Gentleman Usher of the Lords House came down from the Lords, and acquainted this House, that the Lords were ready to give Judgement against Baron Trevor, if this House be ready to come up, and demand it.

Whereupon Mr. Speaker, with the House, went up to demand Judgement against the said Mr. Baron Trevor, in the Name of all the Commons of England, upon the Judgment and extrajudicial Opinion given by him the said Baron Trevor in the Point of Ship Money only.

Mr. Serjeant Wilde went up to the Lords, to desire them, that whereas they had set a Fine of Six thousand Pounds upon Baron...., that they would give Order that the said Six thousand Pounds may be forthwith paid unto the Treasurer at Wars, for the Service and Advance of the Armies.

Mr. Serjeant Wilde brings Answer, that the Lords do agree to the Message carried up by him.

Committee for Scotland.

Ordered, That Mr. Rob. Goodwyn, and Mr. Ellis, be added to the Committee for Scotland.

Message from Lords.

Message from the Lords, by Sir Robert Riche and Mr. Page;

That the Lords will give a Meeting at a Conference To-morrow at Ten a Clock, concerning the Great Seal; and the Archbishop of Canterbury: And likewise desire the former Committee for Answer to the French Ambassador's former Letter may meet, to give an Answer to a second Message. -

They have appointed a Committee of Six Lords, (whereof Three to be of the Quorum;) and desire this House to appoint a proportionable Number, to give Meeting unto them, concerning the Business of a Cessation of Arms in Ireland: To meet To-morrow at Three Clock, in the Afternoon, in the Painted Chamber.

French Ambassador.

Ordered, That the Committee, formerly appointed to make Answer to the French Ambassador's former Message, do meet with a Committee of the Lords To-morrow at Ten of Clock, to consider of an Answer to the French Ambassador's Messages, this Day sent down from the Lords.

Popish Hierarchy, &c.

Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Rob. Goodwyn, Lord Lisle, Mr. Recorder, Sir Jo. Clottworthy, Mr. Lisle, Sir Wm. Strickland, Mr. Ellis, Mr. Whittacre, Mr. Wheeler, Sir Walth. Erle;

This Committee is appointed to meet with a Committee of a proportionable Number of the Lords, To-morrow at Three of Clock, in the Painted Chamber, to consider what is fit to be done upon the Hierarchy, the Bull from the Pope, and the Articles of Cessation in Ireland.

Answer to Lords.

Answer returned by the same Messengers; that this House has considered of their Lordships Message; and will be ready for a Conference To-morrow at Ten of Clock; and do agree, that the Committee formerly appointed for the French Ambassador's Business, shall meet To-morrow, at the Time appointed; and have appointed a Committee to meet with a Committee of a Proportionable Number of the Lords, at the Time appointed, to consider of the Articles of Cessation in Ireland.

Transporting Horses.

Resolved, &c. That the young Marquis De Vieuville shall have Mr. Speaker's Warrant for transporting into France Six Horses.

Leave of Absence.

Ordered, That Mr. Reynolds shall have Leave to go into the Country for some convenient Time.

Soldiers Arrears.

Ordered, That Mr. Blakiston do take a Serjeant's Man with him, and go with these Soldiers, to make a Search in the Place mentioned in the Petition; and that, out of Monies that shall accrue to the State by this Discovery, the Petitioners shall have their just and due Arrears paid unto them.
