D of Devon takes the Oaths.
This Day William Duke of Devonshire, Lord Steward
of His Majesty's Household, took the Oaths, and made
and subscribed the Declaration, and also took and subscribed the Oath of Abjuration, pursuant to the Statutes; his Grace having first delivered a Certificate of
his receiving the Sacrament, and Witnesses were sworn,
and examined to the Truth thereof.
Message from the King, to adjourn.
The Lord Chancellor acquainted the House, "That
he was commanded by His Majesty, to impart to their
Lordships a Message from His Majesty, under His
Royal Sign Manual."
And his Lordship read the same, as follows:
"GEORGE R.
"His Majesty understanding that many both of the
House of Lords and Commons are detained in the
Country, as well by their private as the public Business; and the Holy-days being so near (during which
there is usually a Recess); it is His Majesty's Pleasure,
that the Parliament adjourn to Monday the Ninth Day
of January next; at which Time His Majesty intends
the Parliament shall fit to do Business."
