For Sir Ives du Rubarye master of requests and keeper of the seals of the Queen Dowager of Scots, and Sir William Maitland of Lythington younger, ambassadors of the Queen of Scots to the English Court, with 12 persons in company—to endure for 80 days. Under their great seal. Palace of Westminster.

427. Commission by Philip and Mary. [Jan. 21.]

Philip and Mary, D. G. King and Queen of England, the Spains, France, both Sicilies, Jerusalem and Ireland, F. D., Archdukes of Austria, Dukes of Burgundy Milan and Brabant, Counts of Flanders and Tyrol, to Thomas earl of Northumberland warden of their Middle and East Marches, and Robert Heynmer, LL.D., chancellor of Durham, empowering them to conclude a truce with the commissioners of the Queen of Scots. Palace of Westminster, 4th and 5th of their reigns.

428. The Queen of England to her Commissioners. [Jan. 23. 1557–58.]

Instructing the Earl of Northumberland and Dr Henmer to conclude a truce with Scotland for 2 months—consulting her before agreeing to more—to advise with the Bishop of Durham in all their proceedings from time to time—and to make Lord Dacres and Lord Eure privy thereto.

429. The Queen to the Earl of Northumberland. [Jan. 23. 1557–58.]

Having seen his letter to her Council of the 16th, as to his meeting with Lord Hume at Caldestreme on 14th, disapproves of the 12 days' abstinence then agreed on, as the Scots merely wish to gain time for some secret purpose. Is sending Dr Henmer as joint commissioner with him, and also safe conduct for 2 ambassadors sent by the Queen Dowager to her Court. Having caused her Council to hear the Earl's credence to Thomas Carre, at good length, has appointed the Earl of Westmerland her lieutenant general in the north, for the better defence of Berwick and the Marches, &c.

430. The Queen to Dr Hindmer. [Jan. 23.]

Signifying that she has appointed the Earl of Northumberland and himself her commissioners to treat with the Scots, and commanding him to repair to the Earl for instructions.

Having appointed the Earl of Northumberland and Dr Hynmer to treat with Scotland for a time, requires him to give his advice and counsel as often as they apply for it.

432. The Queen to the Mayor of Harwich. [Jan. 23. 1557–58]

Commanding him, as the King her lord and husband is sending shortly to her his councillor the Conte of Feria, if the Conte shall land at Harwich, to see him and his train suitably entreated, as befits a personage of such honour, and furnished with post horses.
